Pattaya beer bars reopen but there aren’t any customers

4pm1.jpg

Thai media 77kaoded went to Pattaya to investigate how Phase 5 of the ease from lockdown (and the 22 regulations in place) were all going.

They reported that quite a few "bar beer" (open air beer bars) were now open but there were hardly any customers, either foreigners or Thais.

In Soi 6 most of the bars had decided to open and put up with the 22 rules governing their business.

But some had decided to remain closed for now. There were fears about covering staff salaries and overheads with what little income they might make.

Down on Beach Road bars were open and operators told the media that something was better than nothing; at least staff could have the opportunity to get some income.

The media did not directly quote a single person in their report, notes Thaivisa.

It appears to be going just as the unelected leader wants it to go, sadly.  Quite a few bars will be closed forever, with the unnecessary 22 regulations needed to be in place, leaving many, many

Who are all those girls sitting at the bars? There is no prostitution in Thailand! Seriously, 22 rules and regulations for a bottle of beer? 7-11, here I come!

Apparently those girls are "Public Relations" staff and "Customer Service" representatives.

If you sit in on of those bars and order a beer, they will bring it to within a metre of you and then toss it at you (better order bottled beer - slightly less spillage).

To converse with a member of the PR staff or a Customer Service Rep, it is recommended that you have the Line app installed on your phone. As most girls seem to spend most of their time with their noses glued to the screen of a phone theses days, that would be the best method of communicating with them.

As no physical contact is permitted, if a patron wishes to give a staff member a little "pat" on the bum (or elsewhere),  it is suggested that they get the staff member's attention, then simulate the intended gesture (and location), then move at least 1 meter away. Once you have "socially distanced" yourself, the staff member can then move into that spot and give a simulated reaction to your gesture after which she (or he) will move away and you can again occupy your spot.

Beware that such actions may be construed as agreeing to buy the staff member in question a "lady drink" and the more rambunctious your gesture(s) the more "lady drinks" that may appear on your bill !
Be very careful about making any kind of hand gesture that could be misconstrued as a signal to "ring the bell". Waving a hand in the air because some overpaid athlete made it through a game without faking an injury could be interpreted as offering to ring a bell and therefore buy a round of drinks for the whole bar !

Should you wish a staff member paid some attention to your member, please keep in mind that prostitution is illegal and such arrangements are best made in the privacy of your hotel room/apartment/cardboard box in the alley.

Sincerely,
The Management

I’m yet to see any bar adhere to all but one or 2 of the regulations and even those are just for show. Business as usual

As I've stated before, close them all down and and turn Pattaya into a family resort.

There will be precious few customers coming from Bangkok. I'm on the 11 am bus to Pattaya with 18 passengers on a 40-seat bus. Quite pleasant for me but a very sad indicator of present and near-term conditions for the Pattaya economy. If it's bad now, I don't think there will be anything you can call a tourist economy this year.

I thought there was a limit on passenger numbers due to distancing restrictions. When a family member used the Ekamai bus to Pattaya a couple of weeks back capacity was limited to 50%. Is that no longer the case?

It is a family resort. The wife takes care of the kids while the "nanny" takes care of you. Very family orientated.

It is dead out there.

Even the most popular spots.

The venues with smaller multi bars have zero customers.

Even the weekend did not see many Bangkok plates.

Seems people just do not want to travel or have lost jobs or saving money.

And, it all shows the locals can not sustain this place even for a short time.

It is way over built too many bars and restaurants and hotels.

No way no how it will last I think maybe start to recover in a year or so.

Maybe so. There are some couples in the seats. But there was absolutely no one in the waiting area when we boarded and there are a couple of empty seat pairs. But yes, they might have limited passenger numbers.

There is two customers having a beer in the bar, so say 90 baht a bottle that's 180 Baht the bar will take less electricity and salaries ..... hmmmm  ... better close me thinks !!

Don't be sad and don't feel sorry for them, haven't you read that half of Thai people don't want foreigners coming in anyway, so they are getting their wishes come true...

Welcome to the new normal, where nobody dies of the virus but sixty die on the roads and hundreds of tourism-related jobs are axed daily. Sustainable for how long?

Yesterday evening I walked around in Central Pattaya. Made in Thailand - all bars closed. Other areas included Soi LK Metro I would say 50 percent open. Not many customers. Many open bars empty. I had the feeling that nobody in these areas cares about Corona anymore. The most exciting thing was when I passed a ladymen bar. One of the many standing outside blocked my way and tried to steal my wallet.

No longer the case. Go early and you might get an empty seat next to you but the distancing is over.

Beer bars seem to be an important topic. They should be limited by city planning to 3 or 4 per soi. Or alcohol with a food order only.

So instead of congregating noisy bars in single area you are suggesting to spreading them evenly through entire city, 3 bars per street?

With this kind of thinking I'm amazed how were you not yet contacted and given some important position in government. You would fit right in.

Keep your money in your pocket and foot on their neck.
