Govt condemned for putting people’s lives at risk for comfort of ‘privileged’ foreigners

Thai social media on Tuesday (July 14) was filled with messages slamming the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the Army and the government for allowing Covid-19 patients to enter the country just because they are privileged.

More than 30 Egyptian Air Force members were allowed to enter Thailand on July 8 for three nights, and one of them tested positive on Monday.

The incident sparked anger as the infected man was allowed to leave his hotel and visit public venues in Rayong province.

The Royal Thai Air Force reportedly allowed the Egyptian Air Force personnel to enter Thailand due to military ties between the two countries.

Netizens also slammed the authorities for allowing diplomats’ families to self-isolate at embassies or in their residences instead of insisting they be quarantined in state-run facilities.

Several people also attacked the authorities for being careless and prioritising the convenience of privileged people ahead of the safety of Thai citizens.

Meanwhile, Phumtham Wechayachai, adviser to the opposition leader, said the government should not punish the country’s people with its inefficiency, adding that the confusing statements from state organisations over the last few days only proves how unprofessional they are.

He also said that the government should not use this incident to generate fear and extend the state of emergency.

Separately, Palang Pracharath Party MP Sira Jenjaka said the efforts of public health officials and the people should not be wasted.

"If the government measures are not effective enough and they put foreigners before Thais, then we will have to start working on resolving Covid-19 issues all over again," he said.

It is much less a foreign privilege problem...and much more an incompetent Thai problem..."all" people entering the country "must" be tested and quarantined to assure the highest level of protection.

  • Yeap! It's the hi-so that cause most of the problems here in Thailand. Even the foreign ones.

Confining quarantined foreigners to state run institutions conjures up images of a state run penal colony...

I can just envision tourists clamoring to participate!

Once again, you can not and never could get away with anything at a high level unless you were a hiso, had money or were sponsored as a diplomatic envoy.  It goes without saying that people should be passed. Double stadards

Unprofessional .! Surely not .. this must be a typo error where someone has erroneously slipped an un in front ..

In Australia Billionaire Kerry Stokes and Missus also Danni Minoque were allowed to self isolate at home no "off to the hotel " for them

Time these failures to protect the country ends with resignations. That will be the day being accounted for additional deaths. Here and elsewhere. Shame

Same here in Thai education. Up to 3/4ths of the class often just refuses to do the work. They're repeatedly told to it, they nod and give a thumbs up. They still don't do it. They continue this behavior knowing full well that when the term ends, they'll still be passed.

Focus. This article is about Thailand.

Nothing to do with the article. Where is the virus connection?

I can't agree more. This <deleted> infuriated me! Here they've got the problem under control and if they're not careful one outbreak can spread like wildfire again.

The fact that Rayong is so close to us here in Pattaya made matters even worse.

Make diplomats go through the same protocols as everyone else or be prepared for the problem to rear its ugly head again.

Thailand has done a marvelous job of putting the lid on this thing. Don't let us down now!

Anyone hear about a Covid case this week at a Condo on Soi 26 involving an ambassador and his family?  My wife said there was something in Thai news that involved visits to parks and malls and the youngest daughter now in hospital with Covid.

The Egyptian Flight was a shuttle to Chengdu China  :whistling:

Note to powers that be, lets keep that inconvenient fact as far out of the news as possible?! Thanks.

They did in January knowing full well COVID19 was immersed in China but they said come on in we don't care.

I'd be interested to know what alternative to systematic quarantine you'd have to propose?

Right now, any form of international tourism simply means death, most of the Thais have already accepted this fact. I have seen some desperation amongst the girls at Nana and Cowboy, they come to the "office" right now but they can sense that the writing is on the wall. The government must come up with a plan to redeploy this workforce, otherwise unrest is on the way.

Except For Trump who has to display his superiority and lack of human decency, I expect Royalty to be considerate of the people of foreign nations and not place themselves in diplomatic crises by insisting entering countries with disregard to the safety of its citizens health and well being.

So no, not the same for Royalty.

Only because they haven’t asked yet

UK andDutch royals are smart enough to stay home. As for trump and his entourage they are currently not allowed in Europe or Canada

Exactly the same for Royalty, there were protests in Germany about it.
