PM urges press to tone down reports on new Covid-19 cases

Prayut Chan-o-cha

In a press conference on Wednesday (July 15), Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told reporters to make their reports on new Covid-19 cases less scary.

He said the latest case in Rayong province was the government’s fault and anybody affected by it will be provided with help.

When the PM asked what scares people into not leaving home, the answer he got was “the press”, and in response to that he told reporters: “You should ease off on spreading news about recent cases. Tell people to shop as usual as the situation is not severe.”

Moreover, he said, Thailand had suffered the Covid-19 crisis before and effectively brought it to an end.

“We can deal with these new cases as well,” he said. “We do not know if there will be more new infections and whether they will come from local people.”

It has been reported that the premier is planning to visit Rayong in the near future.

I believe it is every person's right to know when someone has been in public with the virus, especially when it is through shambolic negligence by government officials.

Fair point... Except If you don't test the local population everyone is safe because there are no local cases and Thailand can continue deflecting any negative attitudes towards ‘other nations’.. though, not China......Right PM ???...

He is right.

This mass hysteria and paranoia in Thailand is childish.

The press is craving for new infections. Nothing to report is so unsatisfactory.

And all of this for a single aymptomatic case, they better close their country down forever with this scared sheep attitude.

Don't print scary stories because I will have to delay travel into Thailand by at least another month because the Thai people are scared of covid19 and will blame me?

He is right, and media all over the world have really fear mongered with this virus, but I believe he's saying this now to save his own skin.

If the narrative they're feeding to us is that there's no covid19 in Thailand; well, to have someone who's infected just waltz in and roam around freely is a criminally negligent oversight.

I hope that the concept expressed by the PM is to stop media terrorism rather than to hide the cases of contagion from the population.

Removed a troll post and the reply to it.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

The whole narrative here is to deflect criticism of how tourism will survive with no help when look every farang thats comes here is infected and causes us problems then we can blame the press with bad press job done.

How will they square the circle as the cash cow has now been decapitated not many options borrow money print money or form a sub committee or do what other covid under control countries are doing proceed with caution not strangulation ????

In Thailand, yes. In the US, not so much, and the odds get better every day.

Just dumb and dumber.

But the government has been using the media for months now to scare everyone into behaving and following their directives (often misguided) so that Thailand would become virus free. Now that HIS people screwed up, he wants to muzzle the media and claim it's not a big deal.

He can't have it both ways, even though that's the typical behavior from this crowd in all their dealings.

Time for you to man up Prayut and take responsibility. The loss of face would be astonishing.

And same with all the death causes. Pollution (air and soil), bad food, medecine (yes medecine kills too), toxic material (amiante), hunger... etc.

A single virus is way less dangerous if you count all the undue deaths and sicks and injured.

But people can not count. Can not relativise. It's all breaking news media and instant reaction-emotion.

Was the same with terrorism.

Medias are really bad, almost all of them, they sell on fear. Since media exist, almost.

People are stupid, they buy that, they are addicted to that. They do not want to think, just react.

Gouvernements use the fear to have more power and control. That's where he surprised me here.

Stupid world. Insane world.

I will not make friends, but i must say : people get what they deserve... Fear-mongering-medias, abusive governements, insane reaction to a(nother) virus the sheeps make that crazy new world possible to happen.

Not-so-brave new world...

I've always wondered about that phase "aymptomatic case" as that phrase can mean any disease known to man.

Why then present as "covid 19?

Well it`s his and his government fault. Praising week after week how great they were with 0 cases. And lots of Thais were/are naive enough to believe that. They should have continued testing like in the early stages. After all one thing is sure...they were/are not hiding 1000ends of covid deaths and that`s they most important fact.

They should have been honest from the beginning. Thai people would have gotten used to live along with a few active cases, which still impose 0 risk to the national safety in general. However now, every new case will be seen as potential 2nd wave and cause panic.

He admits that it's the government's fault. Kudos to you, Mr P. If only some of the idiot governments in the West were so honest.

There were two cases. The other one was a diplomat's daughter who also did not quarantine. People in Sukhimvit are concerned.

He's done an excellent job in updating the press & media about COVID-19 and the numbers. He has been exceptional in implementing strict measures to curb the virus and it's transmission.

I am very thankful to him and I am glad i'm here in Thailand and not Brazil or the US or Victoria.

Credit where credit is due and I think it's high time the moaners and whinging farang eat humble pie as they continue to whine about nothing. Great job Thailand .... we wish you well ... and the others !  well .... you all know what they can do.  lol

Well, there were no numbers to report, so that was an easy task

Yes he did no tests, hence no infections, and deaths were assigned to something unrelated, yet there were about 20.000 excessive deaths in the first 6 months this year
