The Probation Department have announced that they have purchased 30,000 electronic monitoring devices as part of plans to release prisoners to ease overcrowding in Thai jails.

The system is currently being tested ahead of a rollout in September when 3,000 convicts will be given early release.

Some 100,000 prisoners are thought to be eligible to be released early.

Those to be let out first will be prisoners who have exhibited very good or good behavior and those who are inside for non-serious misdemeanors.

The scheme will allow suitable convicts to work and get money for their families who are struggling to survive without them.

The details have yet to be ironed out but the length of time a released prisoner will have to wear the EM bracelet will be commensurate with time served and time remaining.

I wish them luck. Finding work in the current situation might not be that easy.

Resulting into them doing again what put them in jail previously. My BiL is currently inside and I can guarantee he isn't going to go looking for a job upon release.
