Pig farmers agree to limit pork prices

Thai pig farmers have agreed to lower pork prices by eliminating middlemen, after the Commerce Ministry threatened to limit exports of the meat over short supply and rising prices.

Wiwat Pongwiwatchai, vice president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand, said pork would be sold at Bt130 per kilo under the association’s “pork fights Covid” campaign.

Chonburi consumers were offered pork at the reduced price from July 21, and the campaign will spread to the rest of the country by August 7.

The association is also cooperating with the Commerce Ministry to cap the farm price of pork at Bt80 a kilo so the retail price will not rise above Bt160 a kilo.

“Live pigs are priced Bt78-79 a kilogram … but swine raisers are trying to control the price in line with their promise to the Department of Internal Trade, despite facing losses for more than three years,” Wiwat said.

He added that strict controls against African swine fever had resulted in higher costs for Thai farmers. High pork prices in Thailand are being driven by an outbreak of swine fever in China and neighbouring countries that has pushed up export demand.

Prices of more or less all Meat and Vegetables in Thai Shops, Supermarkets and even Markets are pushed up by too many 'Middle Men' involved.  Some Farmers try to break out of this trap and sell direct alone or as Co-operatives but the Government should stop the practice altogether.

GB deadweight pig prices (UK spec)

Updated weekly

The APP (All Pig Price) is the GB average deadweight pig price achieved by producers each week. The SPP (Standard Pig Price) is the average price for GB standard pigs, those that have not received a premium for the production system, feed regime or breed. The prices are collected from voluntary surveys. These prices are for carcases dressed to UK specification.

The UK-spec SPP averaged 162.43p/kg in the week ended 11 July. This was a slight fall of 0.15p compared to the previous week and was the first time prices have dropped for five weeks. Compared with the same week last year, the SPP was almost 13p higher.

Throughput for the week stood at 161,700 head, only slightly lower than a year earlier but 5% down on the previous week. At 86.46kg, carcase weights were 360g heavier than the previous week.

Reports suggest that the market is reasonably balanced. Some processors have reportedly planned shorter kill weeks due to maintenance, but equally previous bouts of hot weather have apparently slowed some pig growth rates. The mix of processors operating during the week can affect the overall average price. The effect on demand of restaurants reopening remains to be seen, though initial reports suggest orders were lower than anticipated.

The UK-spec APP increased again in the week ended 4 July. At 165.17p/kg, this was 0.53p higher compared with the week earlier. The SPP recorded a smaller increase in the same week, so the gap between the two series widened to 2.59p.

162.43p per kilo is £1.6243, equivalent to 65.2 baht. Cheaper than Thailand. How can that be?

US prices seem even cheaper, around 32 dollars per hundredweight.

I don't complain about the pork prices at my local market, because I can walk there.

The amount I save (and the time) makes it well worth buying from the local markets and

supports small Thai business.

It is however true that since the Covid outbreak the price for ground pork has risen

from 160 to 180 @ kg, a 12.5% increase.

Will government intervention bring the price back down? I'm not convinced.

The wisdom of Thai leaders very well may make it work.

However, historically, governments controlling prices has failed miserably every time it has been tried.

They should get rid of middlemen when it comes to the price of alcohol and should be

classified as medicine, after all if it's good for hands it has to be good for the rest of the body!

Prices in Chonburi are going up as of this Monday. So this is another case of saying one thing and doing the complete opposite. My tgf was told that the reason is due to the abattoir saying the price of a pig is now higher so they have to raise their price when selling to local markets.
