Entering Thailand with less than 6 months on passport

Featured Replies

My 5-year-old son has a UK passport and an Extension of Stay/Re-entry Permit for Thailand, valid until 30 November 2020.  I have a Work extension and he is my dependent.

His UK passport will expire on 22 December 2020.

He and his Lao mother have been stranded in Laos since 20 March 2020, due to the Covid border closure.  They had been due to return on 18 April.

I have applied for a Certificate of Entry to allow them to return to their home in Thailand, via the land border at Chong Mek in early August.

Assuming the COE is granted, will he be allowed to enter Thailand at the border, as his passport now only has 4.5 months left before expiry?  His Extension of Stay and Re-entry Permit are valid until 30 November 2020, so it is my understanding that he will be stamped in until that date.

Since he has an extension they will stamp him in until it expires. There is no 6 month rule for entering Thailand.

Thanks Ubonjoe, that's as I thought.  The UK Embassy in Laos are fairly insistent that I need to get him a ETD to enter Thailand or he may be refused entry, but as that would involve a 700km return trip to, and overnight stay in, Vientiane (as it can only be obtained in person), I do not want to inflict this on my wife and son.

There is no way they would refuse him entry. With the situation being what it is there is even less of a chance of it happening.

I hope so!  The quarantine transport from Chong Mek to Bangkok is costing me 45,000 baht, so I'd be more than a little upset if it couldn't be used.
