The total number of unemployed people in the country was around 2 to 3 million, according to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council, compared to 7 to 8 million feared, Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin said on Friday (August 14).

He said ge would himself monitor the situation of unemployment among new graduates. The minister added that he would talk to related ministries such as Education, Commerce and Industry.

In addition, Suchart aimed to establish a national labour centre in his ministry, integrating all departments’ job for effective operation. The minister said that he would be the head of this centre, and himself monitor the overall operation.

Suchart said he had told the Department of Employment to survey the number of unemployed people, as well as the situation in the labour market.

He has obviously worked for T.A.T. previously, and is used to plucking numbers out of thin air, in order to pacify the people.

I notice he doesn't declare how he came to this bizarre low unemployment count, with the decimation the economy is going through.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimated in April that about 10m Thais in the tourism industry would be unemployed by the end of June if the epidemic hadn't been ended by then. At the end of April 4m people in the tourism industry had lost their jobs. So this 2m figure has been plucked out of a hat. The 10m figure was only for the Thais employed in the tourism industry!

No they didn't:

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimated that up to 6 million people in the sector would end up unemployed,

Really!  Only 2 or 3 million. It takes guts to lie so obviously and blatantly....or is just that he is counting those who have social security???

About as believable as the zero percent unemployment they touted prior to the "agenda!"

Remember:-

Do they count the self-employed in the tourism industry?

He left off the zeros.

He probably thinks tourism is down 20 percent as well.

So they don't really know.... or refuse to say!

Spot on, I think. And of course, many lower paid Thai workers aren't in the social security system. Thats also why they always in the past have come up with these less than 1% unemployment figures.

I'm afraid you're right.

So, once again :

Do those self-employed "informal" workers outside the social security system count as unemployed if they lose their jobs?

It does not necessarily follow that losing a job means you become completely unemployed and remain so. People generally respond to loss of a job by seeking out other livelihoods.

It is entirely possible that 6 million could have lost tourism related jobs and just 2 of those 6 be completely unemployed now. In fact, sounds reasonable. But the other 4 will often not be making anywhere near what they previously did.

"Employment" might simply be helping out on the family farm or in a family owned business back in the home province.

Treble it and people might believe it

yes .....  of coarse it is

how do they coordinate the figures as nobody signs on to get bennys country wide ..they struggle from day to day on a pittance so the whole thing is a sham

As he said he would monitor it, has he monitored it? or is it just a wild wild guess or is it the next stage where he has to lay down in a darkened room ????

The problem with this Government is that they don't realise people will check what they say and when it proves to be outrageously wrong fail to justify their announcement, leaving the public thinking how silly they are.
