The Assembly of the Poor (AOP) on Thursday threw its support behind the Free People movement and called on the government to halt prosecutions against young activists, including its own Baramee Chaiyarat who was arrested on Tuesday.

The national NGO accused authorities of suppressing freedom of speech for all, whether students, activists, or labourers. The AOP said that it would no longer tolerate seeing people being threatened by the government for peaceful political activities.

The assembly also backed the Free People’s three demands – for charter change, dissolution of Parliament, and an end to intimidation of activists.

AOP member Baramee was arrested on Tuesday near Bangkok’s Wat Bowonniwet Vihara and taken to Samranrat police station, said Thai Lawyers for Human Rights.

He had attended a Free People rally on July 18.

It's a shame the Govt disregards the poor, that's a totally different league, hard for them to get a hearing from the generals!

It's spreading now into a national movement, the government will be doing cartwheels in the war-room soon.

They won'y know how to keep the lid on this peaceful movement or how to tackle innocent kids in school uniforms.

Time for some prominent international watchdogs to start saying to the government to lay-off the freedom of speech.

Assembly of the Poor?

If they are poor, why have they not gone back to their farms?

Maybe they do not have a farm to go back too. Many have been in Bangkok for years no more ties to Issan

The Poor do not have farms, lucky to have a pot to p1SS in and one meal a day. Monks have it better than most of the Poor around here.

Time for a new direction of wealth distribution and leadership for Thailand.
