ATHENS (Reuters) - Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was detained for questioning on the Greek island of Mykonos after allegedly being involved in an incident in which police officers were assaulted after a brawl, Greek state TV ERT said on Friday.

Officers were called in to break up a brawl between two groups of tourists. Two other Britons were also detained.

"The soccer player was verbally abusive to an officer and then hit him," a police official said. "The three were resisting when brought to the Mykonos police station."

Manchester United issued a statement saying they were aware of the incident involving Maguire.

"The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Maguire in Mykonos last night," it said.

"Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities. At this time we will be making no further comment."

Maguire and the two other detainees will be taken by ship to the nearby island of Syros, where they will face charges by a public prosecutor, the police official said.

Mykonos is a popular holiday destination with a reputation as a party island that never sleeps.

Extended restrictions to contain the spread of COVID-19 infections go into effect on Friday on the island, including a ban on live parties and festivities, a limit of nine people in all public and private gatherings and compulsory mask wearing.

Typical football brawl.

When the bar video comes out, it'll show Maguire yelling, then pointing his finger at the cops, followed by 3 officers immediately dropping to the floor clutchimg their knees in agony!

How good that he is cooperating, because it´s not like they have everything clear in their mind and on video already. Moron!

Hope he gets to sit in a greek jail for hitting an officer. Unfortunately, they are probably going to pay him off.

Just the clear evidence of that the thug mentality around british football, not even goes away from the player after they reached fame. Incredibly stupid!

I can only assume from your above comments you were there at the time and saw the whole incident....:whistling:

Why would you assume that? Did it not stand that he hit a police officer? Yes, it did!

If that is not considered to be classified as thug mentality, then I am very happy get a clarification from you.

Otherwise you can just go back to your coffee and good book.

Gareth Southgate the England manager has included him in the next England squad after speaking to him personally about the incident... "Harry,s version is totally different to what is being quoted in the media..in my time as manager his behaviour has been exemplary and a model professional, until concrete evidence proves otherwise I am happy to accept his version".....but Mattzon here in Thailand knows different... pathetic ????

Let´s just wait and look for the result. After that we can place your, pathetic description.

May I just ask you? As well as the news many times bend the information and fact, I assume you´ve never heard that it´s quite common that an arrested person have a totally different story than the police? How many times have it been a fact that arrested people lie as long as they can?

Seems Maguires version to Southgate was a load of poppycock hence the 20 months suspended sentence and him being withdrawn from the England Squad.

@petermik, That must hurt really bad, right? I just wonder if you are ready for the discussion over where we should place your fine description of something or somebody being pathetic? ????????

Thanks for the info @Kadilo. I guess at least this discussion has come to an end. ????

2 sides to every story. I heard he was defending his sister who had been attacked by Albanians.

Anyway, if there's one positive to come out of all this it's that he's been left out of the England squad. He turns like an oil tanker towing a cruise ship.
