Its deeper than the English Channel ---where much larger subs roam, and anyway they will be deployed in the Andaman Sea

But No I don't think they are needed.................but who knows just maybe they will find MH370

If you do not know DO NOT guess,  gulf of Thai is shallower than the English channel  gulf  85ft  to 290ft,

I hope the reason for the purchase, the foreign "threat," will be revealed....????

The only foreign threat is China.  Are they going to fight China with their own submarines?

22.5bill baht = $713m dollars or $357m per submarine.

Quite a deal when you consider a Sea-wolf class submarine cost $2.8 BILLION and a Virginia class $1.8 BILLION

But I wonder what the total bill will be: they will have to create specialised maintenance facilities, purchase specialised maintenance equipment, train crews, train maintenance staff!

But the Chinese will supply and provide all training -- at a price!

Don't worry, they will be sent plenty of training materials.  Of course the first one should be a set of these building blocks.

The uproar is wrong. We all know the technological advancements the Burmese have. Thailand must be up-to date with their neighbor's military advancements.

Why? Why must Thailand be militarily equal to its nonaggressive neighbor? Someone concerned Burma may attack? by sea?

If you think this is wasting money in Amazing Thailand, try this!

'For nearly seven decades the Royal Thai Navy has maintained an active submarine division despite the fact it has no submarines. Last year it completed a state-of-the-art, THB540-million base to serve as the home for all of the submarines it doesn’t have.'

 Coconuts Bangkok Apr 24, 2015

Yes, but that Division means more Admirals, so that's okay then. There is nothing like imaginary subs to scare the enemy, whoever they are today. Maybe they think its all just one big video game.

Why would you operate a Sub in the English Channel. The UK bases its Subs in Devonport and Faslane. Both have access to deep water very quickly and can protect the Channel. North Sea/Atlantic from East of the Shetland Islands and the Western approaches South and North of the Scilly Islands.

I heard that Thailand has plans to sell one submarine to Laos for double its purchased price.

This is a Want In Search Of a Need.

Just what possibly could be the rationale for Thailand owning any submarines.  To ward off the enemy China, Russia, or Japan.  Heck, with the relics that Thailand is buying, it is more likely they will sink rather than be any sort of a military weapon.

With stolen technology!

And the sub will be 7 years old already when it is delivered, if it is on time.  Maybe they might have trained a submarine crew on land by then so they have some incapable people to use it, or will it just become another useless display item like the aircraft carrier and A350 planes ?
