Medical cannabis industry gears up to drive Thai economy

Medical cannabis will be raised to the status of an economic crop in Thailand and exported across the world, according to a government subcommittee studying the draft law on cultivation of cannabis and Thai hemp.

 

The subcommittee said Thai farmers should also have access to both certified commercial cannabis seed and be able to generate their own seed stocks, said Weerachai na Nakorn, an adviser to a community cannabis enterprise in Buriram province.

 

The government panel agreed to promote Thai medical cannabis in the Asian, European and US markets, he added, speaking at a seminar organised by the Play La Ploen community cannabis enterprise in the northeastern province.

 

Large areas of Thailand are suitable for cultivation of medical cannabis, which will significantly boost incomes in the agricultural and associated industrial sector, according to studies conducted on the crop, which was legalised last year.

 

However, Thailand currently has only four cannabis cultivars (RPF1-4) and needs to develop more varieties to support industrial production, said Weerachai.

 

Each different hemp cultivar has unique characteristics and is suited to a specific geography, he added. Some are more fibrous, some produce lots of seeds, and some are high in cannabidiol and related compounds.

 

The Play La Ploen enterprise is collaborating with the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation on a pilot contract farming project to grow high-CBD medical marijuana and build a network of community producers.

 

The pilot project is cultivating two strains, a Thai and a foreign cultivar, said Thanaporn Pornsangkul, a scientist at Play La Ploen community enterprise. The goal is to produce cannabis drugs for more than 20 northeastern hospitals in Nakhon Ratchasima, Chaiyaphum, Buriram and Surin.

The US already has a big market with their own product as has Europe with Holland as the main supplier dont know about Asia but highly unlikely they will have much chance of breaking into the markets of the first two with any great success .

They should do an online order from 'The Vault', they have hundreds of varieties to choose from.

The big question is to what extent will small farmers be able to share in this expected bounty.

 Or will it be business as usual with a small cabal getting the real profits and everybody else getting the crumbs?

Will only make them more lazy

Some fibrous and some a lot of seeds.  Obviously they have no idea how to grow killer bud.  Another pipe dream.  Stick with what you know YABA

I am pretty sure all the connected guys have a slice of the future action.  There will be a few somchai's allowed in but that's just for window dressing.

Maybe they could join it and give a free test to the " Safe & Sealed " Tourist ... 

This is just an atemp to show Thailand is relevent.  Better just to concentrate on the local population.  

I have seen a (a year ago) Lao Marijuana Oil being distributed by Thai Cancer sites.

All the road death complainers should be 100% against weed expansion here.

More stoned drivers cannot be a good thing.

Legalize definitively and spread the news ! Tourist will come back quickly as soon as the country opens !

Which cuntries allow the import of cannabis products?

 

Seems like Thailand would have to seek approvals in those countries, which may be quite involved.

 

Agree this sounds like a bong dream.

I think you are living in the past because holland is already importing a lot of cannabis grown in spain to sell in it's coffeeshops . There is just not enough grown in holland to satisfy the market of export and in house selling so a lot of dutch growers moved to spain to grow and then moving it back to holland to be exported or sold in shops .

Seems like Thailand really believes they are first on the planet with this product. Makes one wonder if they even heard about quality control and competition.

MJ is still illegal at the federal level in the US, it's only certain states where it is legal for medical use, and even less for recreational.  Transporting across states is difficult, and there is no way US Customs will allow it to move in or out of the borders.

 

Y'know that old belief that weed makes you paranoid?  Well, they solved that, it's called legalization.  ????

It's still a shock to be in Oregon and know I can buy the stuff in a shop and smoke (or vape) it without worrying about who smells it.

I know what you mean with all their hype these days and with 98% of Thais supposedly believing Thailand is the best (at everything).That being said they do have a long history with this product but I think there were hemp seeds found in some of the Egyptian tombs that were still viable and I suspect China and India were into it long before Thailand was populated by the South Chinese.

Thai-Stick, Thai-Weed etc...
It is certain  that if Thailand can get back to producing the same strain as back in da days it will be embraced world wide.

I agree but if the Thai farmers (my wife with lots of help from me)  are able to generate their own as well as import seed stock then there maybe a chance people will.Have you noticed how many tons of their $hit weed is being busted?That alone should indicate there is at least a domestic market.There are already Thai varieties that have been bred up to modern standards with 20% THC levels.

 Their hubris will make it extremely difficult for them at the start but I think the knowledge is there on the internet for the smarter ones to make a go of it.

I would like to try cannabis oil to see if it can help with my cancer treatment, anyone know how I can get some. I live near Hua Hin

Thailand is still dragging it's feet regarding regulations concerning cannabis. Totally schizophrenic.  They don't want to legalize or deregulate because then maybe citizens might want to enjoy the pleasant effects cannabis without a hangover they get from 'legal' alcohol - and by Buddha those who rule over the commoners won't have that!!!  So they try to commercialize cannabis without fully legalizing it - and this is what you get.  CBC products which is still difficult to obtain unless you fall into a very, very narrow range of authorized ailments, and then attempt to grow cannabis commercially but with so many regulations and regulatory checks as to make it nonviable.  At this point I don't believe they have even decriminalized it.
So, with one hand the beckon the commoners to accept their cannabis cultivation and export plans (which make the wealthy even wealthier), and with the other hand the punch them in the face should they actually use cannabis - again, outside of a very, very narrow range of ailments or under highly regulated conditions.

The extremely wealthy who wanted to capitalize of Thai cannabis will never obtain broad market share unless they they convince their sock puppets to decriminalize or legalize cannabis - which they will never do.  Commoners are meant to suffer.  Buddha said so, or so they think.  These people always wanted to tap the export market.  This was never meant for commoner Thais or anyone else living here.  But - ya can't have it both ways.  At best the Thai market will product 'boutique' products but they will never capture market share globally.
