Meechai wants finger condoms for kids

Famed campaigner urges officials to make sex education not prevention a priority

BANGKOK: -- Aids-prevention advocate Meechai Viravaidya yesterday revealed an outside-the-box idea - finger condoms for pre-school children so that they can get used to them.

Delivering a speech to some 80 participants in an HIV/Aids agenda public hearing at the National Economic and Social Advisory Council (Nesac), Meechai praised Thailand for reducing new cases by 90 per cent. He quoted the World Bank as saying that every Bt1 invested in Aids prevention could save Bt43 in treatment expenses, but said the Thai government showed no serious intention to tackle Aids problems, especially in educating the public.

The chairman of the Population and Community Development Association then revealed his plan to produce finger condoms for kindergarten children.

Meechai said he had received a good result after he put the mini-condoms on his one-year-old grandsons' fingers, as the kids were interested and found it fun. "We must be brave and think outside the box like this, so that attempts at Aids prevention will yield success," he said.

Meechai urged the Education Ministry and Social Development and Human Security Ministry to be open and to shift from focusing on stopping youths having sex to giving them knowledge about safe sex, possibly in the form of handbooks.

The Thai NGOs Coalition on Aids urged the draft legislation on HIV/Aids patients' protection to be scrapped, as many articles are deemed violations of patients' rights. Chairperson Supatra Nakaphew said about 500 people living with Aids were opposed to the draft. Although its intention is to take care of patients, its contents seem to deal a second blow to them, she said.

Supatra cited a requirement for patients to notify a dentist about their condition prior to treatment, or they would face a life sentence.

She added that Article 44 gave a "special privilege" for HIV-positive children not to join normal schools, and Article 45 stipulated a community for HIV-positive people to live together.

"There's no reason to build something specific for HIV/Aids people, because they can live among others in society," Supatra said.

Suspecting the draft might be submitted soon to the National Legislative Assembly, the group has presented its formal objection to the PM's Office's Secretariat, the National Human Rights Commission and the Council of State, she added.

Nesac member Supaporn Thinwattanakul said that a network of Aids activists had formulated and proposed to the council its four-point suggestion for a national agenda on Aids.

First, all state agencies should have a policy for sexual health for all people, such as clinics for sexually transmitted diseases affecting homosexuals.

Second, the government should thoroughly promote safe sex, especially by distributing male and female condoms, lubricants and oral condoms, as well as providing Braille labels for condom packets.

Third, the Aids campaign should change its attitude from "a person with Aids will definitely be dead" to "a person with Aids can live with it".

People should be sufficiently informed about how to take care of themselves and their rights.

Lastly, the government should launch measures to promote all sides' good understanding, harmonious living and Aids issues.

Before anyone start making jokes about this article I would like to point that Khun Meechai Viravaidya is one of Thailands' Giants in the field of bringing awareness of the use of condoms and thus also warning about Aids.

"The Population and Community Development Association has at times attracted world wide attention and Khun Mechai is recognised as Thailand's greatest world ambassador, serving on numerous international committees and more recently as International Ambassador for UNAIDS. In 1997 Khun Mechai was awarded the United nations Population Award for his contribution to global family planning and population control."

Khun Meechai Viravaidya is the son of Dr Samak Viravaithaya & Dr Ella Viravaithaya (His Scottish Wife). Khun Meechai was also a Minister as well as a Senator.

He is also involved with the famous "Cabbages & Condoms" Restaurants and Resorts.

I had the privilige of meeting him once and was impressed by this kind and wise Gentleman.

What he did and is still doing for Thailand is impressive. :o

I totally agree LP. Ridiculous public statements from one as eminent and admirable

as this gentleman should be greeted by an embarassed silence and unseemly sniggers

should be suppressed.

BTW Having once seen a vending machine in France offering "female condoms" (and

not having the change to satisfy my curiosity) I now see "oral condoms" added to the

list. Anybody any idea what these are. My interest is , of course , strictly prurient.

Oral condoms are supposed to be used by both male and female, -for safe sex-, performing oral sex, whatever the gender.

good to see forward thinking regarding AIDS. But finger condoms for kids? with a childs curiosity, how long before we they start testing them on each other? I have a ten year old daughter and am horrified at the thought of friends trying out these finger condoms!!!! it does not bare thinking of what these kids would end up doing with them.Children are curious by nature

.....................and female condoms (Femidom in UK) are like small tunnels that are inserted with a kind of ridge around the outside - somewhat like a ziplock bag.

:D

It's like a shower cap that you pull down and hook under your chin. rolleyes.gif

So coming up for air occasionally wouldn't do any good ?

This idea is a non-starter, but it would be nice to hear about condoms being part of public education in a more appropriate place- in early junior high school, for example (too many kids at that age are still getting pregnant)- would like to hear about the famous "condom over the banana" demonstration in health classes here.

Well I had to google on this (or the zip-lock bag concept might have given me nightmares

tonight).

So

Female condom (with a pic)

http://www.avert.org/femcond.htm

Oral condom , now this is funnier than the idiocies already offered

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5409016.html

Actually , I HAVE to quote it

The present invention is an oral condom which protects the user from contracting sexually transmitted diseases while engaging in oral, vaginal or anal sex. The oral condom provides an improved protective mask which is capable of protecting the facial area of a user from undesirable exposure to infection carrying microorganisms. The oral condom is shaped like an oval with two lateral leg portions which are attached to two ear attachments respectively. :o:D The oral condom includes conformed portions for the lips so that the lips can be more easily moved in a natural way and an extended portion for the tongue so the tongue can move in a natural way and not be hindered by the oral condom.

Seriously , performing oral sex on a gal convulsed with laughter has got to be a BIT hazardous.

MOE believes proposal of condoms for kindergarteners inappropriate

The Minister of Education said Mr. Meechai Weerawaitaya's (มีชัย วีระไวทยะ) suggestion that condoms be provided to kindergarten as part of a sex education program may not be entirely appropriate.

Minister of Education Wichit Sri-Arn (วิจิตร ศรีสอ้าน), said that the incident in which the Chairman of the Population and Community Development Association, Mr. Meechai Weerawaitaya's (มีชัย วีระไวทยะ), proposed that mini-condoms be used as part of a sex education program for 3 year old kindergarteners may not be the best approach in providing sex education for young children.

The Minister of Education said that children of such young ages may not be receptive to sex education material, and that the mini condoms may pose health risks due to choking or infection. Mr. Wichit said that physicians and psychiatrists were required to determine the appropriateness of the kindergartener sex education program.

He admitted that sex education was an important component of Thai education and should be reformed for improved effectiveness.

I was told there is a religion that the man covers all his body in a sheet with only his pecker poking through as they are not allowed to touch the female, anyone heard this one ?

I think pre-school is taking it a bit too far.

At that age boys do not know what "it" is for,

let alone the need to put a condom on it.

IMHO arousing sexual interest too early in life is now right dangerous

and the long term will encourage sexual activity and possibly promiscuity.

This idea is a joke, finger condoms to educate students in that age group is deffinently not the way to go. Now I know why there are so many issues here whith idiots like this comming up with crazy ideas. Im sure he just can not find one small and tight enough to not slide of his knob, so by comming up with this idea, he hopes smaller condoms will be manufactured so he can buy and use them for himself :o

I think this is rumoured to be what takes place on orthodox Jews wedding nights; still it beats getting turned into a pillar of salt I suppose. :o
