BBC plunged into 'Rule Britannia' censorship row

Wagner & lederhosen? The mind boggles.

Before getting into this 'traditions verses habits' lark I found this interview quite interesting/entertaining (starts at 1min 15 secs).

You'll have to wear a Tuxedo if you go to the Wagner Festival, Bayreuth is Franconia not Lower Bavaria.

Bloom is right of course, the Proms should never be scrapped because of concerns about offending BLM fanatics.

On grounds of taste however one could talk about it. I specifically exempt Land of Hope and Glory however, which I quite like.

I'd like to know just what these wokes, BLM racists and other lefty Nazi facists  see wrong with this song....they say it refers to slavery...but slavery was banned in UK 70 years befor this was even written..

The BBC should be plunged into a big vat of vomit.

When the orchestra plays "Land of Hope and Glory" the audience should sing. If the conductor gets the hump, and stops the music then continue singing it without the musical accompaniment, several more times. If she refuses to continue conducting, because of the vicious racism of the audience on whom she is imposing her own views, then let her stamp her tiny feet, throw a hissy fit and escort her from the rostrum. Don't pay her and let her sue if she wants to. Presumably, as a professional conductor of high international standing, she must be aware of the tradition of singing this piece? No doubt the BBC elite will be swooning at the radical fervour of the conductor.

Silly me, I have just noticed that it is to be performed without an audience, That is the problem with us old fascists, so blinded by our bigotry that we sometimes miss things! Never mind, perhaps a large crowd outside could sing it really loudly, so that she can hear it!

I remember being told donkeys years ago with some authority (by a BBC manager as it happens) that it would have been cheaper to send all of Radio Three's classical music programming to it's audience on cassette tape, (admittedly by second class post) than to broadcast it! In these days of MP3 files I suspect that it would be even cheaper!

They would feel quite at home!

If you state you do not watch lice Tv or iplayer you can legally not buy a license, they cannot barge into your home to check and the detector vans are a fraud, do they still have them?

The opposite the BBC love the EU and appear to hate their own country, they find patriotism embarrassing, They stopped being impartial a long time ago and are obsessed with diversity. The number of ethnic actors appearing in roles is actually greater than the numbers represented in the population. Hand wringing this week by one of their red managers about iplayer not being diverse enough. Had a look for the first time in years, here is whats on the first 3 pages of documentaries, BBC wants to celebrate any culture, as long as it's not the British one, seems pretty diverse already

Britain's forgotten slave owners-

Black music legends

African Renaissance- series

Acid attacks - Asian

Grime music

Africa with Ade

Aretha Franklin

Muslim girl sport- Bradford

Black and British

Black power- USA

Black is the new Black- Lenny Henry

Black Hollywood

Plenty more on the rest of the pages!

The BBC is obsessed with diversity. I support patriotism. I do. Really. But there is something embarassing about it when it comes from the British. From someone dressed in a Union Jack suit. Can you really look at the Proms and see nothing embarassing about that almost delirious, feminine, rapturous nationalism?

We expect the British to be above and beyond such displays of naked emotion. Its unbecoming for the British. And frankly Rule Britannia was topical about 300 years ago. Britain has not ruled the waves for a long time now and for Britains to yearn for those times just makes the British look weak and pathetic. Look at what Britain can be today. Be proud of Britain today. Be topical with nationalism. Imagine a music festival where the Romans celebrate the Roman empire in delirious emotional ways. Or a musical where the French celebrate Napoleon in a rapturous way. Or Germans who celebrate the Holy Roman Empire or the Third Reich in a musical festival. It's only Britain that does this. And it looks a little embarassing.

Rule Britannia is an embarassing piece and the rest of the world cringes when the union jack geriatrics give themselves over to rapture. It gives nationalism a bad name.

Sometimes I think so.

Especially when you consider a program like Question Time. The audience of which is picked so there is a majority of pro Brexit Conservatives regardless of where in the UK its taped.

Last night of the Proms-'Rule Britannia!'..such fun..

How dare you suggest the national costume of the UK is anything other than regal and imposing? It must be jealousy, I am sure!

Why play this Rule Britannia thing at all? It's a terrible song, the Horst Wessel song has a more complicated melody.

It's embarassing. Everyone's a winner if this thing is cancelled altogether.

I think I saw one twenty years or so ago - an old Commer van with a 405 line aerial bolted onto the roof. It was being driven by a chap with a luxurious ginger beard and matching kaftan, in the middle of a travellers convoy heading for Stonehenge!

Good to see the BBC doing the right thing.

Of course this jingoistic rubbish should be done away with.

This is 2020 not 1820.

There hasn't been a crowd/audience at any sporting event since March yet the beeb have managed to provided canned reactions whenever a goal etc has been scored...

I’m not sure why.

The ‘Proms’ are an annual summer festival of the full spectrum of classical music, in which world leading musicians, conductors and singers are accessibly and affordably presented to the public, or at least to those who care to show an interest.

I have some very fond memories of attending ‘Proms’ and I’m very grateful for the chance they gave me to attend some fabulous concerts.

During the two summers I was at London I tried, unsuccessfully, to get tickets for the last night, so missed the party, I would at the time have loved to have gone, though I think I might have enjoyed a wry smile over the absurdity of ‘Rule Britannia’.

So the ‘Proms’ themselves are nothing for the British to be embarrassed about, I would argue far from it.

The jingoism of the last night is a bit of a blusher, but more in a tragic sense given it is a symptom of far more troubling matters.

I am a left leaning supporter of equal rights, yet I often cringe at the way the

BBC handles such matters, even if the reasoning behind this announcement is sound.

They see a persecuted minority and completely flood the platform with representatives

of that niche in society. I roll my eyes at their clumsy attempts at doing the right thing,

whilst the farage fanboys go absolutely bonkers in a predictable and ridiculous way!
