Apirak Chai-anon

Well-known gambling tycoon Apirak “Sia Poh” Chai-anon on Friday (August 28) denied having anything to do with a task force set up to tackle online gambling after photographs of him participating in a meeting with the House committee on legal affairs, justice and human rights were published on Thursday.

Apirak was reportedly invited by Palang Pracharat Party MP Arun Sawasdee to advice the task force as he has earned a name for himself for being a successful gambler in international casinos.

“Don’t be jealous. The government invited me to find a way of bringing money into the country. I will accept the position of adviser, but will not get into politics. I will also not act like stupid online influencers, who believe they’re smart and want to be powerful in the country for their own benefit,” he said in a Facebook post.

News that the ruling party had appointed Apirak and another possible gambling tycoon Pol Lt-Colonel Santhana Prayoonrat to advise the task force on tackling online gambling issues created a furore on Thai social media.

Many netizens raised questions as to why the government would appoint gamblers.

However, Apirak later posted another message saying he did not accept the job as he does not know how to handle such a task and that the media must have made a mistake.

This guy's a real charmer. No wonder PPRP wanna deal with him.

“So where shall we build the casinos first?”

I'm not jealous. You, on the other hand, appear clueless... :coffee1:

For the same reason why the government would appoint a convicted heroin trafficker as deputy minister.

Because they can and because they don't give a toss about what you netizens think or fume about.

My understanding on Thai law based on that Dutch man that brought in millions from his weed business in the Netherlands, is that if funds, are brought to Thailand that stem from a commercial activity that is illegal in thailand, they are considered money laundering and are up for seizure with criminal cases to boot.

Question then is, how can this guy both walk freely, whilst also bring funds from gambling in to Thailand.

Brown envelopes can literally solve anything in Thailand. And this guy no doubt has the ability to give out some big ones.

Also quote:-  "task force set up to tackle online gambling"

So, how is money going to come into Thailand if on-line gambling is banned (as here in Cambodia) - new casinos in the resorts operated by the Chinese??

"gambling tycoon Pol Lt-Colonel Santhana Prayoonrat"........... ah, now I know how they can afford Mercs and huge houses with their 30k a month salary.

My question is "Where will the first casino be built?"  From what I know there are millions of trips over the border to neighbouring countries each year for Thais to visit casinos.  I know its an underestimate, but 10.000 baht per person a day would be a reasonable assumption multiplied by millions and that is some serious cash going out of the country.  The local...lets say entrepreneurs...would rather see that cash stay here so they can get a chunk of it.  And the government gets a slice too!  Second question is "How much longer before it happens?".
