Dangerous Thailand: Iron bar at perfect head height to kill a motorcyclist - but the police do nothing

Thai social media went ballistic after a Twitter user posted a video of a pick-up loaded with iron rods. 

 

One of the rods sticking out on both sides of the vehicle stopped in traffic was at a perfect height to decapitate and kill an unwary motorcyclist. 

 

Indeed two slowed to a stop to get round the extremely dangerous hazard.

 

 

The poster slammed their country for the disgraceful actions of many in doing such dangerous things asking "What if the motorcyclists were going fast?"

 

Daily News picked up on the post by Jirayusuree9 adding that the pick-up driver had not even bothered to put any red cloth on the back. 

 

They quoted a storm of negative and critical comments including some that suggested "the police do nothing".

That's what happens when a society is reactive. 

 

 

The driver is an idiot and should be charged with carrier of a dangerous load and other offences.

What's all the fuss about.

This pick-up truck is no different to thousands of others that are over sized and over loaded.

No one seems to bother about any of them, especially the police.

In the event of someone being killed the driver will sprout some cock and bull story that is accepted along wit 500 baht and a wai

Yes, a truck driver could do this in any country.....

 

 

But try doing it in the US/UK/Australia, etc... and see how far you get before the police pull you over, give you ticket AND make you fix it before going any further.

In the UK an improper load carries a penalty of 3 points, which isn't a big deal, and an unlimited fine, which probably is.

Mai pen rai.nobody dead.(yet)

A seventy year old man in Nakhon Nowhere sitting in the rice paddies on overstay and a task force is mobilized, BMWs, mob handed cameraman etc.....to bring the heinous criminal to justice......

 

Yet idiocy and total negligence likely to cause death or serious injury is mai pen rai.

Did anybody inform the police, or only post it on fb?

In general I am no fan of the Thai traffic police. But I am pretty sure in this case they would tell the driver of that pickup he shouldn't do that.

The driver is obviously the problem and stupid and ignorant drivers exist not only in Thailand.

Indeed, there are stupid people in every country in the world. It's just that some seem to have more than others.

I remember the very first time I came to Thailand many years ago. I was talking to a woman in Bangkok, the previous day she had been robbed. Didn't lose too much, not the end of the world, but I asked her "why didn't you call the police?". She told me "what's the point, they won't come unless I pay them, and then they'll do nothing". I was flabbergasted at the time, now I fully understand the situation. The concept of having to pay the police, of all people, to get something done was anathema to me back then, but the police doing nothing was a concept I was familiar with.  

Third world dump. This is ok but they still take your temp when you go in a supermarket even though covid left here 4 months ago!

The chinese have huge parties now in Wuhan, i've seen many video's of it....corona has gone from there.

Exactly that.....  There is no concept of being ‘pro-active’ in Thailand. 

 

Someone who is pro-active is seen as a trouble maker. Why make so much fuss about something which may or may not cause a problem, its potentially wasted effort. 

 

Instead, fein outrage, shock, horror when something like this causes a crazy accident. 

 

 

Imagine if any motorcyclist decided this was too much and pulled their motorcycle in front of the vehicle, got it to stop and created an issue there and then, right there on the road, waited for the police to arrive and pointed out the ‘deadly hazard’...  Would the police have made the driver of the pickup make is load safe, or would the Policeman chastise the motorcyclists for ‘causing a problem’ ???? - therein lies the problem - Complete and total lack of proactiveness on all fronts.

My worse thoughts when riding my bicycle on Thai roads.

Why is anyone surprised. The police are useless despite some posters on TV the other week saying they have had nothing but great things to say about them. Been the same for 20 years that i know off and I believe a lot longer than that.

 

It will not change until the people challenge the police to be responsible and accountable.
