It was 2000 thb and still is, but I negotiated down to 500 thb. First offence top of soi 4 near the garage/McDonalds, kicked a butt under a wall, tap on the shoulder and escorted to police box further up the road. I said I only had 500 baht, but gave the copper a 1000 thb note and asked for change lol.

Second offence walking past Benjasiri park near Phrom Phong BTS, I was really drunk and some Thai guy grassed me up to a copper. I said I only had 500 thb and he gave a lift to the nearest atm on his motorbike 555. I spoke Thai as I know my numbers and how to say that I don't have much money, "pom nit noi dtang khrab, utee krungthep" "haa loi" job done ????

The Police in Soi 4 are still hanging around that area hoping you will walk down the road again , they really miss you , One of the Policemen even asked me where Tribalfusion was and I told them you were back in the UK , they looked disappointed

I'd like to know what 'strain' of COVID he has, assuming this is the first they found in so long they must be very busy sequencing the genome.

He seems to be very cooperative considering he's just been sent to prison, I would imagine most people would tell them where to stick their public health investigation.

If the Thais are sequencing the genome, they will come to the conclusion that the Thai guy is Covid negative and has been  negative all along , and it was infact a Burmese guy who has the virus

...and it's 'the farang' version of the virus.

Are you sensing a conspiracy theory hmm.

I wonder about the reason why they suddenly admit a new case.

I see two possibilities:

1. They need a reason to boost the panic in order to have a reason for a new lockdown, and especially to get some more public support to prohibit the big demonstration for democracy announced for September 19. This is very very likely, probability above 95%, I assume)

or

2. Some in the top elite who normally make a fortune on tourism (thinking about King Power, Bangkok Air, Dusit Thani...) told the government to adjust their policy on closed borders, by step by step making the populace feel familiar that there are Covid cases in Thailand and hence there is no excuse anymore to keep the borders closed. I admit that this is very unlikely. Probability less than 5% I assume. But, one can imagine that not everybody in the elite is happy about Prayut's approach of closed borders and ruining the complete tourism industry.

I was thinking about this earlier and was going to post it.

Scenario 2, warming up the population for more cases and open tourism up. The protests are likely to burn out without mass support from the public and at present it's mainly students. Opening tourism up without quarantine will stimulate the economy and divert attention from protests.

Possible, yes. There is some hope regarding this.

I mentioned in another post (which was later deleted as possibly libeling), that for example the family which owns King Power and 39% shares of Thai Air Asia is part of the most powerful faction of the Thai elite, which is hence more powerful than the weakened faction in which Prayut and Prawit are in. Can't see libeling in the statement, so I post again. Everyone can imagine that they are likely not happy with Prayuts policy of blocked borders.

I am struggling to see how them finally admitting that Covids out there with all the publicity this case will bring will lead to them relaxing the restrictions on foreigners.

The panic and paranoia amongst the Yinnites will, if anything have the opposite effect.

What am I missing?

No, I would really like to know which version of the virus is circulating inside Thailand, I hope they make this information available ASAP.

All those duty free shops empty must be hurting big time and another 6 months or so of being closed will hurt even more. Most things come down to economics at the end, who has the bigger influence wins.

Economics, powerful people need things to get moving. The high end tourist/long stay idea stinks big time and won't bring enough money in. They need to soften people up and start having more daily infections.

There's never been a panic, not by the public anyway.

It's a common misconception that 'the people' panic easily - they don't, they really don't.

Hm, I tend to disagree. I call it panicking how Thailand reacted to the one case of the Egypt guy in Rayong.

Yeah I agree with the economical situation and their ridiculous long stay proposals but can’t see how that will soften up the public. I think they will go full paranoia and want zero foreigners.
I hope I’m wrong.

Everything was ok when I was there, no panic, infections were rising and soon after I left the lockdown started. The longer you go without any infections the worse it will be. Life may have gone back to sort of normal, but the economic damage is far too great without tourism.

I got refused a massage before I left in March before the lockdown for being a leper. ????

How long can they tough it out without serious trouble from the growing unemployed. I've watched a lot of videos of BKK and Pattaya over the last few months. Pattaya bars and restaurants are in serious trouble which cater to foreigners. What surprised me was how quiet the lower sukhumvit was in the evenings on the weekend, all those hi-so malls and hotels must be virtually empty.

Same with me. I left in March, shortly before the lockdown. At that time there was absolutely no panic. In February, tourists from Wuhan were still invited and embraced. But then, end of March, the government recognized the opportunity and started to create panic, and cultivated the paranoia.

The question is, however, what the people are really afraid of, the virus or a new lockdown. Anyway, it has been the governments policy to create panic, to present themselves as the only ones in the world able to handle this situation. They need legitimacy.

Oh dear, that's not a very happy ending! I got a free ice cream from McDonalds a few days before I left.

It was in a village Gov hospital that I had previously used dozens of times and knew many of the nurses there. Was the first time that I noticed a change towards foreigners. I was quite shocked at the time but was a reaction to all the early media stories.

I never noticed anything in BKK, apart from one Thai friend who kept moving his seat away from me. I had done a very quick in/out to KL for another 30 days, he thought I should have quarantined. Maybe the odd old lady moving out of my way on the footpath, no mask, too hot.
