(Reuters) - Jacob Blake, the 29-year-old Black man whose shooting by a white police officer in Kenosha, Wisconsin, reignited nationwide protests over racism and police brutality, pleaded not guilty on Friday to criminal charges filed prior to the shooting.

A complaint accuses Blake of criminal trespass, third-degree sexual assault and disorderly conduct based on statements by his ex-girlfriend at the time, the mother of three of his children, who told police Blake broke into her home on May 3 and sexually assaulted her before stealing her truck and debit card.

Blake entered the plea through his lawyer during a livestreamed court hearing, his first public appearance since he was shot in the back by a white Kenosha police officer on Aug. 23.

Blake, who was left paralyzed from the waist down by the shooting, was propped up in his hospital bed, dressed in a blue shirt and yellow tie, with his lawyer, Patrick Cafferty, sitting in a chair to his side.

Cafferty noted that Blake had been working as a painter and that he had no prior criminal record or convictions in any state.

Blake raised his hand to greet Loren Keating, a Kenosha County judicial court commissioner, when addressed, saying "Yes sir," when asked if he could hear clearly and whether he understood the terms of his $10,000 signature bond.

"The state recognizes that these are serious charges but also that the defendant has serious injuries and he's recovering at the hospital," said Zeke Wiedenfeld, a prosecutor.

The court set trial to begin on Nov. 9 with jury selection. The complaint does not identify the ex-girlfriend by name.

The OP is not related to the police shooting, rather prior criminal charges against Blake going to trial.

Agree simple, if people were only to read.

This is not related to the shooting.

Police officers are trained to aim for center mass for practical reasons. First off, aiming for center mass allows the most error while still hitting the suspect. Second, hitting the suspect means hitting someone else, perhaps an innocent bystander, is far less likely.

Now, do you have any evidence to support your claim that the officers involved went against their training to aim for center mass and instead were shooting to maim with intent to kill? Yes or no?

At point blank range, really?

"There are only two ways to shut down the human body using deadly force, he said. The first is loss of blood, and the other is a shot to the central nervous system. Police officers are trained to shoot at center mass, in the torso area."

That is one of many stories you will find that show police are trained to aim for center mass- and for the reasons I posted earlier. You would probably be surprised how easy it is to miss a target with a pistol, even at close distances.

Please feel free to educate me on how police are trained to shoot differently than aiming for center mass at point-blank range. I would also be interested in hearing an alternate method you may have in mind.

Are the cops supposed to wait until the suspect turns around with a gun pointed at them to do something? Of course not.

Interesting concept. Several yards apart and the guy is holding a knife and... He is still several yards away with a knife.

No doubt if he was white he would be told to drop the knife several times, not shot in the back without any weapon in his hand.

No problem, carry on playing lawyer over the internet. I'll wait and see the outcome of the trial.

For which he is not being charged with rape.

True, though sexual assault has many definitions / categories, some of which would be viewed as 'rape'

It is, but thats not what is alleged. Rape is a specific circumstance of aggravation in a sexual assault charge, for which will not be considered.

If you are going to be a career criminal, then when they come to arrest you don't resist.

EASY!

A career criminal is someone who makes a living from a life of crime? Any evidence at all that this is the case with Blake? And, no, skin color doesn't count.

Did you hear any video  that  indicates that the police did not instruct the  accused to stop?

The attempt to stop the accused before he was shot is evident on the recordings.

I am not going to  judge Blake or the police guilty of anything until the factual evidence comes out in open court.

making unsubstantiated  claims of injustice does not help anyone.

On what basis do you make this claim that a white man would have been treated differently? More white people are killed by cops than black people. Also, how do you know what was or wasn't said with regards to the police telling him to drop the knife?

And still, the fact remains Blake chose to go to his vehicle and reach inside. When cops have guns drawn on you, you are virtually begging them to shoot you if you do such a thing. Another aspect to consider is that domestic disputes are the most dangerous calls police officers respond to.

Love the veiled racist accusation. Typical Leftist tactic. Disgusting actually.
