Fourteen Laotian immigrants who had paid Bt4,000 each to enter Thailand were arrested in Ubon Ratchathani province on Sunday (September 13) and were awaiting deportation to their homeland.

Around 1am, Muang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station was informed about a white Toyota van suspected to be carrying undocumented foreigners. When police checked the vehicle, they found seven males and seven females from Laos inside.

Patiphon Chantakhet, 54, the driver, said that he was contacted to bring them into Bangkok for a payment of between Bt15,000 and Bt20,000.

The passengers reportedly paid Bt4,000 each to get the deal done. They were screened for temperature but all were found to be free from fever.

The driver was charged with facilitating illegal entry into the country by immigrants. Police said they would tighten patrolling along the border to prevent a similar case.

Screened for temperature only?  No proper COVID test?  I would have thought either side would force them to be tested so that contact tracing could commence if any were positive albeit asymptomatic.

Mind refers back to recent case of Thai DJ who was COVID positive through unknown community transfer.

Just deported??? Nothing more, for sneaking in to a country during an emergency decree??? Very well, good luck trying again, next time.

Thats the whole cat and mouse game. Thailand relies so heavily on those entering illegally from neighbouring countries it has to continue to ‘allow’ this to happen while at the same time ensuring the media and public knows that the Police, Army and Immigration are ‘doing their jobs’ to prevent such heinous acts as ‘entering Thailand without permission’....

So... Thailand allows this to happen with minimal or no penalties, those caught just get sent home to try again in future. Its cost them a lot of money, 4000 baht each, which is a devastating amount for those trying to enter.

I wonder if it would make more sense for Thailand just to permit the entry of those from neighbouring countries (who have their own passports) and allow them to work (factories, constructions sites, shops etc). It would cut down a lot of the bureaucracy - getting a local immigrant legal involves a fair bit of leg work and paper work.

That´s the positive side, that they will not oppose. However, in some way it would probably also mean a smaller amount of dough in each pocket. That they will oppose.

There's a lot of Laotians still caught at home who already have legal papers but aren't able to come across at the moment, unless they do so illegally. Just letting them back first would be a start.

Stupid headline, why would you sneak into a country to be deported; Try WILL be deported.

They are to be deported, which means that's what's going to happen to them.
