Mystery surrounds how a two year old girl got out of a room and onto a narrow ledge in Bang Khun Thian, south west of Bangkok yesterday.

A motorcycle taxi rider heard her cries and turned hero as he smashed a door down in a fourth floor vacant room and held onto the child before rescue services arrived.

The drama happened in a block in Soi Thian Talay 16.

"Win" rider Somjit, 45, said he was playing on his phone waiting for a passenger when he heard a cry and spotted the little girl. Wondering how on earth she got there he dashed into the building and to the vacant room where she was outside on the ledge.

Finding the door locked he smashed it down then managed to grab hold of the child.

The mother, a som tam seller, was out.

She said that her husband had gone to work and she had left her child sleeping in their fourth floor room while she bought things at the market. Usually if the child awoke she would go to see her gran who was downstairs.

She would have been unable to climb out onto the ledge from their room as there is a grille to stop that.

Asking her child what happened the little girl said that a man in red trousers with no shirt invited her to get an ice-cream. She was baffled as to how her daughter had got out on the ledge.

Rescue services had the situation under control within 20 minutes and the child was safe.
