geovalin
PHNOM PENH, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy to Cambodia on Wednesday strongly condemned the United States for imposing sanctions on a Chinese firm in Cambodia, saying that the United States is violating the firm's legitimate rights and Cambodia's sovereignty. The spokesperson said in a statement that the United States completely ignores the facts and it is based on unwarranted charges to impose sanctions on Chinese developer Union Development Group Co. Ltd. (UDG) in Cambodia. "The U.S. sanctions citing domestic law is a blatant hegemonic act," the spokesperson said. "The U.S. suppression on the legitimate investment of a Chinese enterprise in Cambodia has not only harmed the lawful rights and interests of the company, but also trampled on the sovereignty of Cambodia." The spokesperson said the Chinese Embassy to Cambodia vehemently opposed and condemned the U.S. sanctions and urged the United States to correct its wrongdoing and withdraw the so-called sanctions. The UDG, a private enterprise from China's Tianjin Municipality, has been developing Dara Sakor integrated resort, which is a large-scale tourism and entertainment project in southwest Cambodia's Koh Kong province, the spokesperson said. The project is a comprehensive investment and development pilot zone approved by the Cambodian government, and it is in full compliance with the laws and regulations of Cambodia and has made positive contribution to the socio-economic development of Cambodia. The spokesperson's statement came a day after the U.S. Department of Treasury declared sanctions on the UDG, referring to the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act and an executive order of the U.S. government. http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2020-09/16/c_139373628.htm 1

Popular Post geriatrickid
For reference sake, the sanctions are mostly in respect to transacting with Americans. They are intended to target the perpetrators of serious human rights abuse and corruption under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, and will prohibit UDG from conducting business with any U.S. citizen, and from using the U.S. financial system. Union Development Group Co., Ltd. (UDG) is considered to be a part of the Chinese military industrial structure. It is linked to the construction of the not so secret military and naval base integrated with the Dara Sakor project. The Chinese are alleged to have gained control of the land through what human rights organizations and monitors termed as a corrupt seizure. The construction of a large military base in Cambodia presents a security threat to Vietnam and Thailand as well as other countries in the region. In most countries, the blatant corruption that allowed protected wildlife and forest in Botum Sakor National Park to be turned over to the Chinese military would be questioned. The Chinese UDG is alleged to have falsified its registration (registering as as a Cambodian-owned company, headed by a Cambodian national) 3 years after taking the land in the deceitful manner, UDG changed back to being a Chinese-owned and operated company. Under Cambodian law, the land was to revert back to Cambodia. Much of the forest has been decimated due to logging for the Chinese market and by poaching of rare and endangered animals for the Chinese potion market. The Chinese have been active for the past 20 years in the destruction of the forest as they try to convert it to palm oil and other commercial growth. The widespread use of Chinese pesticides and herbicides has contaminated the soil and water. Why are the Americans and others so upset? Well aside from the expansion of the Chinese military presence, the Cambodians collected monies from the west to protect the forest area. Some might say that in effect, the corrupt regime of the Chinese puppet state, ripped of western governments and charities by taking aid money only to allow the Chinese to violate the Cambodian farmers human rights and to build their military base. What will it take to get the world to wake up to the Chinese government abuse of the environment and furthering of corruption in the region? 6 1

So, let's just confirm, you support the illegal destruction of protected forest lands, the eviction of poor farmers and the violation of undertakings not to militarize the region, so that the Chinese can build a large army and naval base. The "resort" is integrated into the much larger military installation. 3
