Medical experts see Covid-19 risk for Thailand from foreigners

The risk of Covid-19 spreading has increased, especially due to labourers coming into Thailand from other countries, Dr Yong Poovorawan, an expert virologist at Chulalongkorn University, said on Thursday.

He said that the total cases in Myanmar had passed Thailand to more than 4,000, with Yangon city being the epicentre of the outbreak.

“Covid-19 could enter Thailand when someone comes into the country. Both countries have a long border and many natural channels. We need to control  migration to prevent the outbreak,” said Dr Yong.

Chulalongkorn University professor of medicine Dr Thira Woratanarat also warned about the sharp jump in global infections.

“It took 43 days from 10 million cases to 20 million cases [June 27 to August 9],  then took 38 days to 30 million [August 9 to September 16]. Yesterday [Thursday],  new Covid-19 cases had increased dramatically by 325,840 with 5,708 deaths," Dr Thira said.

He added that the virus stiuation in Europe was getting worse: Spain and France have more than 10,000 new cases, while UK, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, as well as Iran Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia and Canada have got more than a thousand per day.

“Recently, Myanmar reported 222 new cases, totalling 4,043 cases with more than 60 deaths. The 14-day quarantine measure is great, but as more people return from abroad, the chance of asymptomatic patients are there. I would like to asked all quarantined people to avoid going out too much. Another 14-day home quarantine is highly recommended.”

Allowing foreigners entry is risky for Thailand and it might be better to follow the sufficiency economy philosophy to lower dependence on foreigners until the virus situation can be contained globally,” said Dr Thira.

More scare tactics, we already know that they will find someone with the virus somewhere, and they also announced a new death from a ministry person who returned from Saudi.  If you would test the pub

Also know as sliding right on the top of the poverty curve. Works, but unpleasant. I doubt Thais after being used to McDonalds and Starbucks are willing to go back to chewing khauniauw.

Sharp rise in infections because of a sharp rise in testing for infections ?

lets hear about how many of those infections require hospitalisation or result in deaths  and how many have mild or no symptoms.

But these demagogues don't want to hear this, and don't want to tell this. It's against their real agenda.

Covid 19 is an absolute gift for general Pinocchio and his minions, get's to put the boot into the dirty fallang and allows him to spread fear among the serf's whilst dragging the country back to the locked feudal country they long for, they love it!!!

...said a yellow, weathly and well provided demagogue, who is very likely on a special payroll of corrupt yellow and olive-green gangsters, to his suffering and desperate fellow countrymen.

Yes, a great idea to follow (if you have money). If you don’t, then all you have to look forward to is the sweet release of death.

I was quite partial to the philosophy in the movie Layer Cake:

“You’re born. You take s***. Get out in the world and take more s***. You climb a little higher and you take less s***. ‘Til one day you’re in the rarified atmosphere and you’ve forgotten what s*** even looks like”.

But of course in Thailand, this doesn’t apply.

For any of those still hanging on to their business in the hope any kind of open border will be soon....this is a clear indication, cut your losses now as there ain't gonna be no tourists allowed back in Thailand for another year.

This article describes the situation in South-East Asia quite well, but unfortunately fails to mention Thailand, which is among the most racist countries in the region. Especially, as in Thailand so called "experts" from universities like these two demagogues of Chulalonkorn University prostitute themselves in order to boost racism and xenophobia, instead of explaining to the people scientific facts about the virus and its transmission:

I guess the latest visa category is a non-starter then....

Still, the Thais are no worse than other headless chicken governments around the world, saying one thing today and another tomorrow.

Maybe some of you remember an old Beano charcter called Jonah.

Whenever he turned up anywhere there would be shouts of "Aaaarghh, it's 'im"

That's how I feel whenever this man's picture appears on  Thaivisa CoOVID topic!

Instead of attacking  the chap for being Thai or having a presumed wealth, how about considering his statement in respect to the explosive growth of infections outside of Thailand? Does he have a valid point?  I think he does.

Ooh, you condescending one, you! Mate, there is more COVID in your country than all of the 'little ones' you so berate put together. Logic would dictate that. How could it be otherwise when you invite it in? But mum's the word, hey. Keep spouting it and eventually the dodgy WHO will listen. Chulalongkorn?

There is no emergency.

Over 3 months of repatriation flights of Thais abroad, who don't test prior to boarding that plane and still only 59 deaths in 70,000,000 people. That's just about a 0.00008% chance of dying of Covid 19. If you are an epidemiologist doing a health risk analysis, this illness wouldn't even factor in... would never even be considered.

He does have a valid point,so maybe he should start encouraging his "Government" to provide free testing and set up mobile testing facilities and encourage it's citizens to go and get tested so it can locate outbreaks instead of relying on other countries to detect cases that "originate" in Thailand instead of burying it's head in the sand and pretending Thailand doesn't have local transmission.
