Ex-PM Thaksin asks Thai people if they are better off 14 years since the putsch

Maybe true.  But being about the most important thing happening in Thailand right now, you'd think a Thai based forum would cover it better.

Instead, we get thread after thread about...  The Amnesty, will it be extended?

One does not read Thai Visa to find out what is really going on in Thailand. The forum covers many things very well, particularly immigration matters, but politics is really beyond its scope.

  • The rich obviously are, the poor not at all. Cannot wait to read the drivel from the Thaksin haters, who, by the way, was fairly elected, as was his sister, who was also illegally deposed.

  • Along the lines of ' yea but Thaksin ...'   They will never admit that what Thailand has now is worse than what it had under Thaksin. To admit this would be to admit they were gullible fools

  • In the beginning Thaksin did a lot of good for Thai people, woke up the Civil service so you could get things done in a day,not a week, introduce free health service for Thais and Farangs, rea

I expect that most of those farangs have died or been forced to leave Thailand.  14 years is a long time and I am depressed knowing how quickly time has passed.

In respect to the former PM Thaksin, he is still obsessed with having his revenge and regaining  his lost face. Right or wrong, that period is over. He cannot go back in time.  He's like the old guy who sits on the stoop,  waving his cane and yelling at the kids  making too much noise when they play on the street.

And to those who will criticize the man now for being opportunistic. Well, in the good old days of the anti Thaksin posturing in TVF, if the position was reversed and Thaksin or Yingluck still around, his detractors and critics would be ripping into him because of the Covid19 response. Their Covid19 response would have been little different than the current administration's.

What a confused post. It's not Thaksin that has engaged in an obsessive campaign of revenge. It's his opponents in the unelected elites (military, Sino Thai cartels, feudal dinosaurs etc) and their shadowy backers that have driven themselves crazy in trying to annihilate his influence.Thaksin doesn't plan a come back though obviously he's keen for his historical impact to be seen as positive. He has already won in the sense that the final outcome is assured however long it takes.Thaksin is certainly taking a shot now with his question about the country's progress in the last 14 years. But what rational person could disagree with his point?

As to Covid you are right that the response wouldn't have been much different. But Thaksin would have had a much clearer exit strategy.

And it's not as if the voters didn't know he was corrupt when they voted for him (and his sister).

Don't think it's much to do with that.

Thaksin represents the Lao speaking Thai people which is about 45% of the population.

They all vote for him and will always vote for him or his proxy.

Which is why the Army can never allow a free election.

Are Thais better off now than 14 years ago? Difficult question to answer, I would hedge my bets and say at least economically no. Household Debt to GDP has risen from about 50% in 2008 to are me 75% now.  The % of graduates out of work has risen. And Thailand has dropped on the world happiness index from 6.8 to 6.0. And income held by the poorest 10% has dropped annually in the last 4-5 years.

Would all of this have been different under Taksin and without successive coups? Well there is no way of knowing and is just speculation.

To admit you were wrong is more than some fragile brains can stand.

It would also result in a huge loss of 'face'.

I like the way you present your opinion as fact there.

So what is your opinion ?,

In Australia, we would say Thaksin is stirring the possum. And it is a valid question.

When will that criminal finally shut up? He stole enough money from the people and he divided Thailand like nobody else in recent history. Thailand had more than enough of Thaksin and his family. I hope he stays in the desert and chokes on all his money.

Thanathorn showed up last night at the protest around 7:30 pm and rallied the crowd.

Rangsiman Rome the new(er) politician supporting the Thai protesters showed up earlier and again is there today.

May I correct my last sentence of #15 (How much money will "return" to him and some of his military minions or well connected friends, when the Chinese pay for the useless submarines?).

instead:

........... when the Chinese have received the funds for the uselessw submarines. !

Prawit says: "Yes, I am."

I do think Thaskin  takes away from this new movement.   To speak  now makes this about him vs the current government.

This guy's a has-been. He's a fugitive wanted by ASIO, Interpol and the Thai government.

Forget him and move on .....

You are finally right ... Thaksin is a has-been just like Pinocchio and Watchman are!  These last 2 are worse though since they think themselves so great.  They are just a couple of washed up generals that need to go ...

Thailand was fully behind Thaksin until Sonthi came along mate. Sonthi caused it all after his mate Viroj was removed as CEO of KTB.

KTB was Sonthi's personal piggy BANK, and he had billions of Baht worth of business and personal loans forgiven so he then went out to destroy Thaksin.

In my 30 years I have never seen the country so united as after the 2001 elections.

So you are talking nonsense.

Of course, Suthep, Prayut, Prawit and the rest of government cronies are just the bastion of unity and honesty, aren't they?

And they had the support of the Sonthi media empire too!

Working on the rigs in the South I remember they used to have Sonthi's yellow shirt media channel running in the galley 24-7

There's only one person to blame for Thai land's divisions and current predicament and it ain't Thaksin.

obviously he is an attention grabber. He needs to go lay down somewhere forever.

Are you referring to Thaksin or Prayut?

Because people here are sick of Prayuts voice.

I'm referring to Thaksin of coarse. He's out of the equation, so why does he keep talking.

Let's put it into perspective, which is the bigger crime ? Anything the elected PM Thaksin did, or.........................

Treason - the crime of betraying your country, for example by helping its enemies or by trying to remove its government using violence.

I rest my case, Prayut and his cronies should be removed, and incarcerated for a long spell.

For the same reason you do I guess; to further your agenda and political views.

Btw Taksin is not wanted by Interpol or others. His 'crimes' such as they are, are limited to Thailand. Although I notice that Prayut has jumped on Taksins populist bandwagon to shore up support for himself.

This man owned Man City football club and passed the EPL fit and proper assesment prior to his takeover. Being wanted by Interpol is an instant fail.

So your list of who is trying to arrest Thaksin comes down to a bunch of corrupt generals!
