Conditions for community power plants to be proposed within October

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Energy has stepped up its effort to establish community power plants, in support of localized energy stability and careers, with details of the project likely to be presented to the National Energy Policy Commission in late October.

 

Minister of Energy Supattanapong Phanmeechao indicated that his office is to meet next week with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Ministry of Interior and other relevant agencies and organizations to push the Power Plant for Grassroots Economy Communities project by discussing conditions, principles and criteria for the plants and basic pricing for energy production.

 

So far, it has been decided that the plants will have to support the growing of produce that can be converted into energy to provide career and revenue opportunities. Parameters of the project are to be proposed to the national energy body this month, with an aim to begin operating a 100-150 Megawatt pilot facility by the end of this year.

 

For cultivating energy produce, it has been decided that a minimum of 80 hectares must be secured for farm, as this would be sufficient for energy production and provide significant job opportunities. Appropriate plots have been identified in Khon Kaen, Buriram and Ubon Ratchathani.

Yes CHP plants in the UK use natural gas or wood pellets either imported from scandinavia or made from pallets. Growing casava or palmoil to manufacture ethonol or fire local power plants seems equally non green. Hydro and nuclear also have downsides. Wind doesn't. However first thing to do is to stop the Chinese burning coal which pollutes the atmosphere alongside other problems they create!

Out of interest Power companies seem to think local power plants should increase their profits rather than produce cheap power for local communities so all the financial benefit falls to them leaving the environmental cost to be bourne by the local community. In the UK I successfully negotiated discounts for local communities as part of 3 Combined heat and power plants so it is possible

Grid tied roof top solar installations are a good way to go.  With solar panels improving all the time and using solar tracking systems a few dozen houses in a village can be a great help.  We could add 10-12 kW to that grid with rooftop on our house and shed.

Seems like a fine way to continue to destroy land and turn the place in to a desert. Whats wrong with solar power? Works great! Most household appliances nowadays are efficient. I have an air-conditioner, but never use it. Thats more a Thai trait????
