Grandmother faces charges for offering granddaughter to repay loans

A 57-year-old woman faces human-trafficking charges for forcing her 16-year-old granddaughter to sleep with a loan shark as well as her friend as a payment for money owed.

The Pattaya resident also faces the charge of prostitution involving a person aged over 15 but below 18.

The case was reported to the Paveena Foundation for Children and Women on September 2 by the suspect’s 33-year-old daughter, who said she had heard about this incident from her relatives and neighbours.

The woman said her mother was a gambler and owed a lot of money to loan sharks. She also said her mother had tried to get her to sleep with creditors, but gave up when she got married.

The foundation took the girl under its custody on September 3 and reported the case to police.

However, the 16-year-old only spoke about the case 20 days later, saying she had been forced to sleep with men who her grandmother owed money to.

She was then taken to Banglamung Police Station to file a report.

On Monday, police told Paveena Foundation that it has collected evidence and has asked Pattaya court to issue an arrest warrant against the loan shark, grandmother and her friend. All three will face human-trafficking charges, while the grandmother will face an additional charge of prostitution involving a person aged above 15 but below 18.

As soon as she heard about it she reported it to a group who could help.

What more could we expect from her?

I did not read that was the mother and there is a chance it is her sister. You seemed to miss the question. If indeed it was the mother, I could expect more.

Good point that it could be the sister, but if it was the mother this really is the most we could expect: in Thai culture, to report one's own mother is a strong move.

If what you mean is that the mother should have been aware of her daughter's every move, you have to remember that the girl was 16 and presumably being "looked after" by the grandmother. The mother may have been working and unable to deploy the level of surveillance you expect. When she did become aware, however, she did the right thing. Plenty of parents here would not have done that.

Decades ago when reading articles about prostitution in Thailand, it was noted that a lot of the girls working in the massage parlours in Bangkok had been "sold" by their parents to pay off debts. (Drug debts, gambling debts, loan shark debts, etc.)

The traffickers would give the parents the money to pay off their debts in exchange for a contract that required the girl to "work" for them for x number of years. The girls weren't kept as prisoners and could have ran away, but they knew their parents would be left holding the bag (so to speak) if they did.

Of course, once the contract was up and the debt paid off, many of those girls stayed in the trade as it was the only life they knew. Some stayed at the massage parlours, some moved on to the go-go bars or became freelancers.

It's something that has been going on, not just in Thailand but across SE Asia, literally for centuries. There's always people that rack up more debt than they can afford, and other people willing to take advantage of that.
One way or another.

It's just the system that is so wrong

Yet many people support it. Including some posters on TV.

If they are still in the country.  Why do RTP announce they are going to seek paperwork in advance of an arrest which gives the villains time to clear out their bank accounts, shred incriminating documents and emigrate to Dubai?

I'm pretty sure guys who accept sex with an underage girl as payments for debts owed are kinda low scale sharks that can't afford immigrating to Dubai. They'll probably do the most sensible thing and try to hide at some relatives place

Why in gods name didn't the mother keep a closer eye on her daughter and tell her to speak out quickly if the grandmother told her to do it?

This was preventable.

I've long thought it very strange that the term 'sleep with' is used, everywhere. I doubt very much that is what they do. The correct term is 'have sex with', but people just can't bring themselves to say or write it. Bizarre.

Vile woman

A few wrist slaps and Wai's will suffice from Grandma and the Loan Shark will just pay a few grand to the Cops and it's back to their normal 'loving family lives' !

Scum the men that slept with the girl should be charged with rape and the mother and grandmother with procurement.

Yes indeed, as seen in the "girlie" bars of Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai etc. etc. etc..

Why the Mother? The child was obviously being cared for by her grandmother so the mother could work and send money back as soon as anyone found out the grandmother was reported. You can't monitor the child from a distance that was the grandmothers' job placed in a position of trust by the mother she betrayed that trust.

The mother placed her daughter in the care of someone who had already tried to sell her off to pay her debts.

There was no "sister" mentioned, or even suggested, in the OP, it clearly stated that the 33-year old is the victim's mother.

Loan sharking should be made illegal - they are the scum of the earth!

No, it doesn't. Not even vaguely. They never refer to the 33 year old woman as the mother of the victim.

The 33 year old woman is the daughter of the grandmother, but it could well be that the victim is the daughter of another family member (another daughter or even a son). It doesn't say the 33 year old is the sole child of the grandmother.

I found it rather odd that no mention was made of the victim's mother and that the 33 year old was never referred to as her mother. If the 33 year old woman was the mother, you'd think they would have made mention of it in the article.

Also odd that the 33 year old apparently found out about the incident from "other" relatives and friends. You'd think if she was the victim's mother, she'd have found out from her daughter directly (maybe not, depends on the relationship).
