Top U.S. health official Fauci says Trump no longer coronavirus contagious: CBS interview

(Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is no longer capable of spreading the novel coronavirus and can attend a town hall on Thursday without putting others at risk, top U.S. public health official Anthony Fauci said in an interview with CBS Evening News.

 

Fauci said that he and his colleague Clifford Lane at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) concluded this after reviewing all the COVID-19 tests taken by the president as well as an additional test conducted at an NIH laboratory.

 

Trump revealed early on Oct. 2 that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. He said he had recovered and was no longer contagious the following week.

 

The town hall with NBC News is less than three weeks before the election in which Republican Trump is trailing Democratic candidate Joe Biden in opinion polls.

 

Fauci also said in the CBS interview that the United States was unlikely to have 100 million doses of a vaccine deemed by regulators as "safe and effective" available by the end of the year, contrary to a claim Trump made in September.

 

Enough vaccines to inoculate the general population might be possible by April 2021 if all of the experimental vaccines in late stage clinical trials prove effective, Fauci said. A couple of the vaccine candidates could potentially receive regulatory clearance in November or December but only "a few million" doses may be available to the public by year-end.

 

He added that the experimental antibody drug made by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc <REGN.O> that was used to treat the President, and which Trump said he wants to make free to all Americans, is not yet available in sufficient supply to provide to all COVID-19 patients. It is still awaiting U.S. regulatory clearance.

The doctors and medical professionals at the fully government funded Walter Reed Hospital deserve recognition for their achievement.

The Regenerondrug was developed from tissue derived from an aborted fetus, a bit of a stumbling block to getting this drugs to all Americans, perhaps a legal block if a religious zealot takes a seat at the SCOTUS.

He might not be contagious anymore,but he sure is toxic.

I thought I’ve been seeing hundreds of posts from people saying they don’t want to take experimental drugs and vaccines.

 

And now people are criticizing Trump for taking experimental drug, which they don’t want to take. Make up your mind people. Are you willing to take experimental drugs that might save your life or might cause you harm?

Is that the best you can do? And I can claim that I've seen hundreds of post from people who say they would take experimental drugs. Dr. Fauci was very confident about this medication. He expected it to be approved in September. He was off by a bit but the fact is that it is very close to being approved. Trump wasn't exactly running an heroic risk.

People are not criticizing Trump for receiving an experimental drug rather they are slamming his hypocrisy in receiving socialised Govt funded healthcare whilst doing his utmost to destroy the ACA and take that same care away from 10's of millions of Americans in the middle of a pandemic.

Spot on as it's impossible to get infected after the debate with Biden and become clear of the virus in such a short time.

As no details of tests taken before his positive reveal are given one can assume he knew he was infected or he was not tested anytime before the debate.

Donald, Melania and their son infected with Covid and all recovered within a short time without any problems. And all this happens just before the election. What a story...

Without any problems? Trump suffered 2 bouts of hypoxia for which he was given oxygen. Also was put on steroids and given monoclonal antibodies.

Fair and square apparently means using funds, treatment, drugs, facilities and care not available to the general public (who actually pays for all of this).

He's not a hero, no matter how you twist things. That he got over Covid-19 using the best resources the country got on offer, still doesn't take away from doing his bit to spread Covid-19.

Using Trump’s definition of hero; he is not a hero when he allowed the deaths of more than 214,000 deaths under his watch. I prefer a hero that has no death.
