Stormy weekend forecast for most of Thailand

The Meteorological Department has announced that Thailand will be affected by storms until Monday.

A Category 1 active low-pressure cell east of the Philippines has intensified into a Category 2 tropical depression, and as of 10am on Thursday, it was moving slowly northwest into centre of South China Sea with maximum sustained winds at about 55 kilometres per hour.

On Saturday and Sunday, it is expected to intensify to a Category 3 tropical storm making landfall in central Vietnam.

Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rains have been forecast in some areas in the North, Central, Northeast and East, with warnings of flash floods and runoffs.

In addition, a strong monsoon trough is lying across lower Central region, upper South and the East, while strong Southwest monsoon is covering the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand. These will bring isolated heavy to very heavy rains.

Meanwhile, up to 3-metre high waves have been forecast in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf, which are expected to rise higher during thundershowers.

People have been warned of surf, ships have been told to proceed with caution, while small boats are advised to remain ashore.

Interesting, so the monsoon is not yet over. This last week, as the TV was beaming nightly pictures of floods & rain from lower Thailand. Up north the cool/dry season was trying to push in, after a weekend of wind.

Why is it that almost all the depressions from the Pacific have to hit precisely central Vietnam (Da Nang) instead of South (Ho Chi Minh) or North (Hanoi) Vietnam, and mostly spare us in Thailand ?

There was a time when Thailand enjoyed a nice monsoon coming from the West.

Now, with the changing climate, Thailand has to deal with the disastrous typhoon season from the Pacific.

When has the rain ever stopped anything that was deemed important from occurring.  Rain only slows one down in the sense that you should drive slower, and allow more time to get from where you are to where you are going.  Rainwear was invented so that you could enjoy the outdoors.  I agree that torrential downpours ruin the day, and floods invade homes, destroy property, and keep you from going where needed. Definitely stay off the sea if your in a small craft, and stay away from the sea edge where a rouge wave could take you away.  As far as the political issues with protestors, rain will not stop these people from doing there civic duties to right the wrongs committed as they see it.  Be safe folks, a combination of sun and clouds here in my neck of the woods.  Enjoy your weekend.

More storms around than you can poke a stick at.  The wife and I were on the motorbike yesterday and got hit with a torrential downpour.   Down in Bangkok the rain may go away but the storm front will be there for quite a while...if you follow my drift.  Will history repeat itself?

Off topic posts and replies trolling about the protests have been removed.

The rainy season is what it is: raining.  Try to enjoy every season.  In any event the reservoirs are still half empty I heard so we need the nam tuam.

This is NOT the rainy season.

The rainy season, a.k.a. the monsoon, is over (look at the weather in India).

What we get now is the typhoon season from the Pacific which is not supposed to affect Thailand, but unfortunately the climate is changing, and not for the better...
