THAILAND (NNT) - The latest weather advisory from the Meteorological Department has led provinces at risk of flooding to prepare themselves for impact, and warn villagers to be on alert in order to minimize damage.

In Ubon Ratchathani, the province has opened a Heavy Rain Response Center where governor Sarit Witoon urged all units to develop their response plans and prepare to assist the public, including possible evacuations and the removal of water hyacinth obstructing the flow in waterways.

Provincial officials are instructed to get the latest update on water volume at 13 reservoirs in the province, and to inform villagers along the Mun River to keep themselves updated on the latest news.

Meanwhile, Chainat province has warned villagers to be on alert from today until 19th October, by instructing local government agencies to inform the general public in flood-risk areas to prepare for possible flash floods and strong winds.

In Bangkok, Deputy Governor Sakchai Boonma has called a meeting of the city’s Flood Management and Mitigation Coordination Center to prepare for expected widespread precipitation. City Hall will be deploying officers and installing additional water pumps at flood-risk locations, managing the drainage of key canals to make room for rainwater, and closely monitoring rain patterns at the city’s 24-hour flood prevention control center.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration will be working with the Royal Irrigation Department to manage the volume of water in the eastern part of Bangkok, and closely monitor the water levels of canals in order to mitigate expected flooding.
