Typhoon Goni, which tore through the Philippines on Sunday leaving a trail of destruction, has weakened to a tropical storm as it moves over the South China and toward central Vietnam, where it is expected to make landfall on Wednesday or Thursday, according to the Thai Meteorological Department.

In its first announcement about Goni, the Met Office predicted more rain and strong winds in northern Thailand on Wednesday and Thursday, as it warned people in the area to brace for continuous rainfall and flash floods.

At 4am this morning, the storm, with 65kph winds at its centre, was located at latitude 14.5o North – 119.5o East and was moving west at a speed of 20kph, said the Met Office, adding that it will weaken before it arrives in Vietnam.

The Meteorological Department announced on Monday that super typhoon Goni will bring more rain and strong winds to the North on Wednesday and Thursday, and warned residents to beware of flash floods.

The typhoon has moved from the Philippines to the South China Sea, with its highest wind speed at around 65 kilometres an hour.

“It is expected to weaken before landing in central Vietnam on Wednesday and Thursday, which will bring more rain and strong winds in the North,” the department said.

People have been warned to be ready for flash floods and monitor the department’s announcements.

Visit the department's website or call the 1182 hotline for more information.

Already downgraded to a weak tropical storm now - no longer a typhoon.

It may track further south than this story suggests but it should be a tropical depression by then. Hope rain misses Korat area though.

Depressing forecast as there are a few more heavy storms on the way... In the past we always had a very dry and super hot high season following a soaking wet season. Hoped this season 20/21 would be more in balance, but it doesn't really look that way... It's either hot like in a pizza oven with the whole garden drying up and dying or everything is under water. ☹️

Goni is a weak TS now, still offshore Vietnam and tracking WSW. I don't see any of these other heavy storms you mention?

Still a weak TS now and still offshore Vietnam, tracking slowly WSW. Likely to track across southern Vietnam then Cambodia as a tropical depression with decreasing winds but area of rain filling out with rising central pressure.
