Foreigner injured in clash with protester during pro-democracy rally at Jomtien Beach

A Russian man was injured in an altercation with a pro-democracy protest leader in Chonburi province on Sunday evening, local police said.

 

Some 30 pro-democracy protesters who call themselves “Ratsadon Pattaya” had gathered at 6pm on Sunday at Jomtien Beach in Banglamung district.

 

The protest leaders took turns in giving anti-government speeches, both in Thai and in English, urging Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha to resign. Among them were political activists Sirawith “Ja New” Seritiwat and Narathiwat “Ken” Khamma.

 

 

Witnesses said that while Sirawith was giving a speech on the stage, a commotion occurred at the protest venue when a foreign tourist got into a heated argument with Narathiwat. The protest leader allegedly headbutted and pushed the foreigner to the ground. Police officers monitoring the situation intervened immediately while the protesters dispersed shortly after the incident.

 

 

The injured 52-year-old Russian, who was visiting the scene with his 10-year-old daughter, had blood all over his face. After the man was treated for his injury, he and Narathiwat were brought to Muang Pattaya Police Station for questioning.

The Russian gent kept his cool, his Thai assailant competely lost it and deserves to be charged with GBH. What caused the confrontation in the first place; anyone know?

The Thai guy was definitely in the wrong however we don't know what caused the anger (maybe the Russian had a different opinion to his aggressor).  I still think that if I was there with my child I would have walked away.

Who in his right mind would bring his 10 years old kid to a protest demonstration and argued with the demonstraters.

No excuse for such physical aggression. None whatever. Disgraceful.

The lady, who talked to your daughter tried to help you but you ignore her. And you continue stayed there like a superman ! Why ?? 

 

If you live in Asian long time already and you dont know the basic rule "Never mix yourself into political matter" , than sorry to say that you are stupid and your fault.

Political is very sensitive matter and no farang has right to say anything !

Never challange anyone for political issue. Even local people won't dare to do so. Say sorry and GO from that place !.

Why did you stay there longer with your daughter ?? You have nothing lose there. Just GO out from the area, as people has shouted you to go already !!!

Yes, but you are in other country with other rule and other culture. Dont live in other world with your whole culture. You must adapt yourself. Even native people won't dare to challange it. Why you as foreigner should do it ?

Cool won't help anything . Just go out from the place. If you adapt yourself in other world better than this, it won't happen such thing like this.

Once i was in Jakarta and there were also protests going on...they came to our street where the Hyatt was and when they saw me walking they also all started against me...i only walked there to the hotel, didn't even look at them.

I have lived in Thailand for 30 years. I understand very well how Thai people have trouble controlling their emotions and are prone to violence when provoked. Personally I would have avoided the situation in the video. But there is still no excuse for the physical aggression and blaming the foreigner for what happened, as you appear to be doing,  is a further sad reflection on Thai culture.

I've seen Asian looking people in political protests in the USA recently. 

Not a good message to show his little girl. He should have hit the guy back.

I'm still wondering what the provocation was.

Simply standing there with his 10 year old daughter surely cannot be understood as a provocation.

some of my research suggests Narathiwat “Ken” Khamma is a redshirt, many Thai comments described him as a "mobster".

 

that's exactly the type of people the current movement doesn't need in their ranks.

No reason though for a couple of Thais being very aggressive if you are pro democracy you shouldn't be against hearing another opinion.

Guess the Russians DNA got triggered when he saw a democratic movement that wants to depose a totalitarian leader
