The Thai idea to relax the visa is for you to have a half million baht with you in case

you have to spend all your time in an expensive quarantine hotel, or hospital.  Yup,

the Thai way of saying, no we do not want tourists until everything is totally under control

and there is a vaccine being used.  Of course they have their valuable faces to protect,

so just said that they will relax the visa, with conditions,  OF Course!.

Geezer

Thats one reason I keep doing it, but the experience could be greatly improved, especially if they are considering trying to attract more people to live here.

Why would they "be trying to attract more people to live here."?

Like many countries they want tourists to inject foreign currency, not migrants.

They want Thailand to be a retirement destination, hence why the visa is relatively easy to obtain bar the waiting for renewals and the low age to entry.  The retirement business is big business globally and the Thai government wants a piece of it.

Good point re age requirement.

In that case I'd expect them to go all out and ditch the stupid rules such as 90 day reporting and yearly renewals.

Same old BS who do these people think they are fooling the Thai economy is on a cliff edge all we have heard for the last 4/6 months is the Chinese are on there way and what did we get 36 Chinese so called tourists that wouldn’t have even covered the flight crews salaries ,these people need to get real there are millions of Thais without work the islands are decimated all you see is signs for rent and the shutters down ☹️☹️☹️☹️

Thailand's economy is not on a cliff edge. Of course, the tourism industry has been decimated, but the rest of the economy is fairing ok compared to the rest of the world.

"On a seasonally-adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP declined 9.7% in Q2 from the previous period's 2.5% fall."

https://www.focus-economics.com/countries/thailand/news/gdp/economy-records-sharpest-contraction-since-1998-in-q2#:~:text=Thailand%3A Economy records sharpest contraction since 1998 in Q2&text=On a seasonally-adjusted quarter, recession in the second quarter.

This puts Thailand in about the top third of the world in terms of least economic impact - in the same ranking as the Netherlands and the US. Once travel resumes at a somewhat normal level, the tourism industry will recover, and hopefully at a more sustainable level.

As being seen in Europe now, which is almost fully under some type of lockdown, the cost of opening up for tourism is far outweighed by the cost of partial or full lockdowns.
