Okay. I've been doing my best to figure how to get my new site listed by search engines - most prominently Google. Have learned that getting one's url listed on a so called "link farm" might not be a good way to succeed in having the site appearing on the first few thousand pages in the search results. One might get blacklisted

On the other hand - if one would like to have his site recognized by Google in less than half a year - then one must get his url posted on some site(s) that gets crawled on a regular basis.

So, my question is: Does anyone know "directories" to avoid or - even better - directories worth submitting to?

Although I'm quite unsure on what a 'link farm' is - I've found an example on what I suspect is such one on 'www.budu.com/edit.php' ... You can see your site listed in less than 30 seconds ... However the whole budu-site apparently hasn't taken much effort to set up.

Setup a Google Adwords account, and advertise your site for a week. Google will crawl your site instantly. I've had a brand new site show up in Google in less than 30min this way.

Cost: $5

Inclusion in directory: Instant

If it's Thai related try the Nation's web directory.

If it's allowed, and relevant, posting the link on a forum is good because forums and other pages with rapidly changing content get crawled more by search spiders.

Don't fall for "We'll get you #1 in Google" from so-called SEO experts out there. There are people who are experts at optimizing for search engines, but these people aren't it. Most are scams that will feed you to link farms and get your domain banned from the indexes.

Don't forget Yahoo and Live.com who are still 35% of the search market.

Look for sites which you compliment. For instance, someone has a site travel in Chiang Rai it's worth it for them to link to your Chiang Rai photo gallery, and for you to link to them. Relevant links make search engines happy.

I find referrals from other sites deliver far better results that worrying too much about pleasing Google. To many people make the mistake of designing a site around a search engine rather than the people that it's supposed to serve.

Google "vilesilencer" - that will give you a good list of about 500 SE friendly dirs.

Other possibilities would be the directory announcement board over on Digitalpoint.com

Avoid link farms like the plague....
