Silent Hunter 4 - Any Good?

Featured Replies

Anybody here played Silent Hunter 4 (PC) yet?

Silent Hunter 3 is a real blast but the follow ups been getting some bad rep.

Any good or is it a let-down?

Just started playing it. Certainly looks prettier.

There have been two patches since it was first released, plus a few mods from the community; and people seem to be warming it to it now.

Released it Thailand for around 600 baht, so not a big price hit (providing you live in Thaiand)

Seeing this thread, I was going to ask whether anyone knew if "Silent Service 2" is available in LOS - an old (1985?) game from Microprose based on the US sub war against the Japanese. The graphics are nothing by today's standards but the gameplay is excellent. I have played it a lot over the years but then gave my copy to a friend who got addicted to it.

Anyhow, the good news is that I googled it and it turns out that it's actually available for free download as a 700-ish kb zip file :o

Apologies to all........

In my excitement that I found a source to replace my long lost Silent Service 2, I clean forgot that there's an old style protection on it - that you have to identify a class of ship to get the campaign game under way. A bit more digging and I turned up a source for that part of the manual along with the keyboard guide - a zip file that contains 5 x JPEG shots of the relevant manual pages:

As it turns out, the www.subsim.com site is anyway a great resource for fans of the genre - tips and patches for just about all the subsim games you can think of..........

While I'm on the subject of old games, I also found a useful site for downloading replacement manuals:
