Songkhla to Phatthalung: New bridge a step closer to reality

Hat Yai Focus reported that plans for a new bridge that would link Sonkhla to Phatthalung across Songkhla Lake have moved a step closer to reality.

At present two bridges linking the two southern Thai provinces are spaced so far apart meaning that those in between them are faced with long journeys to get from one province to the other.

A new bridge of 6-7km length would solve this problem cutting the average journey time by about two hours.

In addition emergencies would be less of a problem especially for Phatthalung folk needing to get to Songkhla.

The development that means the plan is closer is an EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) being currently conducted by the highways department into the feasibility of the scheme.

This is bonkers, the proposed bridge will connect to the little bit of Songkhla where barely anyone lives. As said above, just a chance for local politicians to line their pockets. There a million and one things the people of Phatthalung would rather have them spend the money on.

Agreed. This bridge makes no sense at all. Krasae Sin District and the small peninsula of Koh Yai is no man's land. I've had the pleasure of visiting there myself, but since barely anyone lives there, or in the neighboring districts of Sathing Phra and Singhanakhon, what's the point?

Ranod District already has a pretty good connection to Phatthalung Province by the Tale Noi Lake.

Driving from M. Phatthalung to M. Songkhla it'll still be faster to just drive the regular road towards Hat Yai and then northward.

...insanity. The just keep going with these ridiculous 'infrastructure' projects as a blatant money grab. There was a story in KhaoSod recently about local backlash to all the money wasted on seawalls in numerous districts...too late, however...the damage is done and the crooks have gotten away scot-free...
