Hi :o

I have been reading posts regarding thai visas and would be grateful for some info as the whole visa thing now with Thailand seems a little complicated.

We last visited Thailand in '97 and did not require any visa (NZ passports) in those days, but we needed to leave and reenter every three months. We would just cross into into Malaysia or Mynmar, get our passports stamped out and back in and that was it.

However the reciprical agreement between New Zealand and Thailand has since changed and now like other countries we need a visa and I have been trying to follow the 90 day rule.

Basically is it within a six month period you can stay in Thailand for 90 days, leave for 90 days and repeat the process again? I presume this would be a tourist visa?

I assume a non-immigrant multi entry would be a better option or would the 90 day thing apply between each renewal?

We're wanting to come back to Thailand for a few years or longer

What is the purpose of your proposed stay in Thailand ?

What are your ages ?

We need this info to reply to your question

A tourist visa will allow you a 60 days stay which can be extended within Thailand by another 30 days

Any stays with a visa do not count for the 90 days within 180

A longer stay would require a Non Immigrant type visa which would be valid for 1 year.

If you are over 50, I would apply for a tourist visa while in NZ, this will give you both a 60 days period of stay upon arrival in Thailand.

After 30+ days, go to your local immigration office armed with a letter from your embassy stating that you have income of more than 65k per month. 3 ID pictures, copies of your passports.

Immigration should be able to change your visa from Tourist to Non Immigrant O and give you a one year extension of stay.

You could also apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa in NZ (check what documents are required) this will give you at least a 90 days stay stamp upon arrival. you can then apply for the one year extension within the last month validity of your stamp

You couls also appply in NZ for a Non-immigrant OA visa which will be valid for 1 year and allow you to get a 1 year stay validity stamp upon arrival in Thailand. You need to check what documents are required as they often involve bank balances, medical certificates, etc

Thanks for your help

We could run into difficulty with 65k per month

We will need to have a rethink

What about leaving after a tourist visa expires

and returning with a new tourist visa issued say in Malaysia?

Is that an option?

Nothing has changed. You don't need a visa to enter Thailand for 30 days and you can get 2 more 30 days stamps in a 6 month (180 day) period.

You'll just have to do the border runs combined with tourist visa runs to neighboring countries. Penang is one of the best for that.

So we don't come on any visa and just extend the 30 day entry after we arrive twice within 180 days

Then repeat the process?

For as long as we want? :o

You're limited to 3 x 30 day visa exempt entries in a 6 month period. You may be able to get a 2 or 3 entry tourist visa from the embassy in New Zealand before you arrive which will be very convenient. In that case you would only need to do a border run every 3 months.

I guess we should talk to the embassy here in NZ and see what's up

As you say if it's possible to get a multi entry tourist visa it would be great

Thanks for your help

You did not say so we assume this is not a Thai/NZ married couple (which would open another method at 40k per month).

You're right we aren't Thai/NZ and we're partners not married so I would think that we would be recognized as indivuals when it comes to income

Would I be right about that?
