Thailand to launch nationwide Covid-19 vaccination in May

Thailand’s Covid-19 vaccination programme will begin in May 2021, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC)’s action plan revealed on Thursday.

 

The country last week signed a Bt6-billion deal to buy 26 million doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine to immunise 13 million people.

 

The vaccine will first have to pass safety and quality checks applied by the Thai Food and Drug Administration and Department of Medical Sciences under the Public Health Ministry, said DDC director-general Opas Karnkawinpong.

 

Secondly, the DDC will prepare vaccination centres at more than 10,000 subdistrict health promotion hospitals nationwide to reach communities quickly and prevent crowding in large hospitals. A cold-chain transport system to maintain vaccine quality is now being prepared, and officials are being trained for the mass vaccination programme. The first to be called for registration will be medical staff, young children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.

 

Local health authorities will then summon registered participants for vaccination at health promotion hospitals or mobile health units.

The vaccinations will begin in May 2021, according the DDC action plan.

 

A programme to monitor any adverse side effects will run from July until January 2022.

 

A public information campaign will also explain that groups with high natural immunity don’t need to be vaccinated right away.

 

Opas confirmed that vaccination will be provided free of charge by the government. Private hospitals can source their own vaccine supply, he added.

i just thought kids were practically immune to covid. isn't that why they keep primary schools open during lockdowns now?

any foreigners wishing to stay in thailand will have to make the choice.

And then just a short 6 months from now the vaccine will be here.  Not likely.  Counting their chickens before they hatch.

 

But wait there is more.  I thought they were going to produce the vaccine here in Thailand with the contract.  I am so confused now.  But watch the baht will sky rocket on this great news of the second coming of Jesus Christ aka the Covid 19 vaccine.

Prepare for some grandstanding by DDC director-general Opas Karnkawinpong. He's just become a VIP celebrity.

where does that leave us farangs? Farang kids as well?  Will  we get a free vaccine according to our age group?
will we be able to buy it?

Just because they approved the Pfizer vaccine, will they really be up and running to give vaccinations next week.

Maybe and maybe not as it still needs to be delivered and could be next week or anytime after that, but until they come out and say who will be vaccinated, I seriously do not believe they will be given to people who wish to travel.

 

"The UK has ordered 40 million doses of the vaccine, enough to vaccinate 20 million people with two doses, given 21 days apart. Around 10 million doses are expected to be available for use in the UK in the coming weeks for priority groups, including healthcare workers, with 800,000 doses arriving next week".

Then the question is: Why did they not preorder as well, as other countries did? 

 

Where they just waiting for a Chinese vaccine? Or are their priorities more to have arguments to keep the emergency law as long as possible active during the coming year? Or were they busy with their own money making and just forgot to preorder a vaccine? Or, are the Western vaccines simply too quickly available now, as the bankrupted Thai tourism industry is not yet cheap enough for investors from China and from their own clique?

 

Probably all these points play a role together.

According to the news story, private hospitals will be able to secure their own supply of the vaccine. Presumably, anyone would be able to receive an immunization (for a fee) at one of these hospitals.

The majority of initial production quantities have been committed to the governments that funded the development and testing of the vaccine. I don't believe Thailand provided any R&D funding.

The powers that be wont allow any mass tourism before or around Songkran for sure so hence the month of may being touted!

So what will they do with 26 million doses if it doesn't pass the rigorous Thai checks?

Insist on payment up front Boris with a million bits of paper with photocopies and 3 signatures per page for each dose ????

Prayut already announced that they will not open the borders until all Thais are vaccinated. So, don't be too optimistic. It might take at least one more year till they allow us dirty farangs to come back to Thailand, even if we were vaccinated. It will take a long time till "all Thais" are vaccinated, of course.

 

Does this make sense regarding avoiding Covid in Thailand? Certainly not. But, as I mentioned already several times, what Prayut and his gang are doing is purely political, and it has very little to do with Covid and their proclaimed aim to save lifes.

 

I guess they are paid very well by China to keep the borders closed, in order to ruin the country and its tourism industry, and too make Thailands bankruptcy assets a bargain to Chinese investors later in 2021.

That's the expensive Pfizer vaccine that the UK just approved.

 

Neither the U.S. nor the UK have approved the AstraZeneca vaccine as yet, which got a bit of a black eye recently it was discovered that their most successful medication dosage trial didn't include any elderly test subjects.
