COVID-19 among returnees from Thachilek is the highly infectious G-strain

COVID-19 carried by returnees from Myanmar’s Thachilek township has been identified as the G strain of the virus, which is easily transmitted and causes more severe symptoms than other strains, said Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of Disease Control Department, today (Saturday).

49 of the hundreds of people returning from Myanmar have tested positive for COVID-19 and they are now scattered across seven provinces; 37 in Chiang Rai, 5 in Chiang Mai, 3 in Bangkok and 1 each in Phayao, Phichit, Ratchaburi and Sing Buri.

The 49 include nine cases among 107 who returned to Mae Sai district, of Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai, through orderly repatriation arranged by Thai and Myanmar officials under the Thai-Myanmar Border Committee framework.

I do not know what you beef with Thailand is, but the fact is that they have managed the Covid-19 situation as one of the best in the world.

What is sad is that they have citizen that thanks them by crossing illegal borders. That´s hard to work with, but they are still doing as good as they can.

Apparently that's because it's carried on the G strings of bar girls.

Highly infectious, easily transmitted and patients immediately report losing a few thousand Baht.

The G strain is already the dominent strain worldwide. Nothing new here.

Naturally a strain that is more easily transmitted will quickly predominate.

fake news,carry on

I initially read that as "highly infectious G-string" ????

The article says the G strain causes more severe symptoms where as other studies say it's less severe. So unless the article is misleading then there is something new here!If the article is misleading then perhaps something should be done to rectify the situation.

The G strain is said to be ten time more infectious than D, but not any more severe. This is a really excellent article:

Looking at this cover photo, grass is visibly greener on the other side too

So do you believe Cambodia did even manage Covid better?

Some of the more recent research (published on November 26) indicates that the D614G mutation may not actually be more infectious at all. It may just be the "founder effect" that leads to it being more prevalent.

Quote

University College London's Genetics Institute ran the study through 13000 coronavirus mutations.

Scientists identified 12,706 total mutations in SARS-CoV-2 — the virus which causes Covid-19 — and none of them was found to boost infectivity. This includes D614G.

Coronavirus mutations not more infectious

That's what I thought.I guess the info in the article is a tad misleading which I thought might be in breach of one of the forum rules about posting misleading information.PBS didn't post it here did they?It has nothing to do with PBS.
