The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) on Thursday announced that it had opened the new Rangsit Station and has shut down the existing station now that the Red Metro line railway (Bang Sue-Rangsit) has gone into operation.

The new station is approximately 300 metres north of the original station.

Passengers can purchase tickets on the 2nd floor of the station.

For more information, contact 1690 at any time of the day or night.

This is without a doubt the worst location for a stop.  It is going to be a disaster getting into and out of. Only 1 way in and one way out.

True, the old station managed just fine with the minimal long distance traffic so all will be good for a while.

When the Red Line opens properly it will be a whole different ball game, it's the terminus too.

Would I be correct in saying that if you want to purchase a ticket, for example to Chiang Mai, one must go upstairs to the ticket office then back down to board the train at road level??

Yes and later when the red line fully opens you can go upstairs and catch the train to Bang Sue Grand. But you have to buy a different ticket. The station is designed to avoid people having to cross tracks. A national passtime here. Brilliant hey!

everyone I talk to seems to agree the smart thing would have been to redirect it to the big field area near FuturePark. but that would have meant leaving the SRT the way it was or redirecting it.

All being said I think that there is going to be a huge problem there is no parking or room for taxis or minivans.

They have the same issues at Khot Kut but at least it is on a main road.

Indeed, but that land doesn't belong to SRT, would have added zillions to the costs.

And it would have made the Red Extension to Thammarsat and beyond somewhat difficult.

I have booked a flight from Loei to DMK and 6 hours later from DMK to Phuket on Christmas Day. Flight arrives around 1pm and leaves at 6:20pm. Is there any way to use this new train to go Cha Chu Chak Market by train from Air Asia terminal and get back easily to catch my evening flight? I worry about getting stuck in a traffic jam on the road.

Not easily I'm afraid, there's no new train yet, just the replacement Rangsit station so it's still the regular SRT train timetable.

You could get SRT from Don Mueang to Bang Sue then the MRT from Bang Sue to Chatuchak Park, you'll need to check the SRT train times in order to be back in time.
