The Ripper on Netflix – What happened to Peter Sutcliffe and his wife Sonia?

Netflix's The Ripper, originally named Once Upon a Time in Yorkshire, charts the gruesome crimes of Peter Sutcliffe, a lorry driver from Bingley who was convicted of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven more between the years 1975 and 1980.

Given the brutal nature of the killings, many of which involved a hammer and a knife, the press began referring to him as the "Yorkshire Ripper" on account of the parallels between himself and Jack the Ripper.

Sutcliffe was given 20 life sentences in 1981 and was sent to Parkhurst prison on the Isle of White.

Less than three years later, he was transferred to Broadmoor in Berkshire, a high-security psychiatric hospital, on the grounds that he was believed to be "suffering from a grave form of mental illness".

Sonia still lives in the house she shared with Sutcliffe ( Heaton, Bradford ) her new husband refuses to set foot in the house and has an apartment nearby.

Sounds like a healthy marriage ????

The Police did a poor job, they interviewed him 9 times I think ?,

the should have had him with the Fiver they found on a dead

lady, but they were too focused on the Mackam guys tapes.

I have tenuous connections to him. The firm he worked for was in Shipley, my home town, and my mum knew his boss.

When I worked in Nab Wood cemetery as a casual labourer in my student holidays in 1969, he worked in Bingley cemetery a few miles away. Labourers were often moved around jobs but I never worked in Bingley and don't recall ever meeting Sutcliffe esp as he looked so unusual.

He probably ran over my GGG grandad and GGG grandma's unmarked grave in Bingley cemetery with a grass mower at some stage.

Well, I did say the link was tenuous!

I was born in Baildon but worked in Shipley  . I was interviewed, along with others, as the £5 note was ( eventually ) narrowed down to 5 companies, “ Parkies “ where I worked at the time and Clarke’s being amongst them.

Surprising! My mum told me the firm he worked for was at Low Well along a small road behind the public toilet (no longer there) adjacent to the railway bridge and the 'Metal Box' factory. You can see on Google maps. It's the road that leads to the appropriately named 'Gallow's Bridge' from Leeds Road alongside the Bradford Beck.

Ah okay, I always wondered where Clarke’s was.

Despite my move to “ the Box “ in 1984 ( until recently )when Parkies shutdown I never realised  it was there !

It seems that is the lorry he used in several murders - see this article- http://nyenquirer.uk/the-rippers-lorry-murders-4-doncaster-sheffield/

It also says that Clarke's was on Canal Rd, so not sure if that is true or not.

I also thought Clarke’s was somewhere on Canal Road. I worked at MB for 31 years and never noticed it on Dockfield Road, of course it could have been there at a previous time ( before ‘84 ).

Dockfield Road is not ideal for large lorries, the driver’s delivering to MB always complained about the narrow road and cars parked badly so a move to Canal Road would have been a good idea.

No, the location I was told is not on Dockfield road. It is at the side of what was Metal Box between the Metal Box' and the railway bridge over Leeds Rd just off Leeds Road at Low Well. There are buildings still there, maybe original ones. Google shows the road with yellow bollards at the junction of Leeds Rd and the service road at the end of which my mum said Clark's was located. Gallows bridge is also indicated at the end of the same road.

I think it was interesting to watch. Quite some mind boggling police blunders, and their pre-computer file store was a toothless monster in its own right.

The prevailing attitude towards sex workers at the time was appalling and police almost seemed to encourage the Ripper to kill more prostitutes, so long as he can manage to stay clear of "innocent girls" and "respectable women" that is. With a police farce like this, it is little wonder that they caught the guy this late into his spree.

Good to see "life means life" playing out in the end with regards to Sutcliffe's incarceration for the benefit of the victims' families. He deserved to die behind bars and he did.

Okay, I was forgetting MB had a different site at Wrose Brow , that was well before my time.

I believe they moved to Dockfield Road in 1964 !

Andrew, I still think we are not on the same page. This is the road I mean. I was told Clark's was at the end of this side road. Metal box had a branch on Leeds Rd Windhill, not Wrose Brow, and I remember it moved to Low Well on Leeds Rd next to or near this road I marked on the map.

Just downloaded it from P Bay. Looks interesting. With things like this, and other documentaries on say WW2 Arnhem, or Billy Connolly in USA etc, I follow on Google Earth.

That is true, I worked in Bradford and would commute home to Keighley on Canal Road passing Clarkes Transport.

Ok I was wrong then. Thanks for clarifying that.

No worries Card, just found this on Wicki.

After leaving Baird Television, Sutcliffe worked nightshifts at the Britannia Works of Anderton International from April 1973. In February 1975, he took redundancy and used half of the £400 pay-off to train as a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver.[12] On 5 March 1976, Sutcliffe was dismissed for the theft of used tyres. He was unemployed until October 1976, when he found a job as an HGV driver for T.& W.H. Clark (Holdings) Ltd. on the Canal Road Industrial Estate in Bradford.[13]

Okay, I know MB moved to Dockfield Road in 1964 and people used to mention Wrose Brow as being a previous site.
Whether there was another site or if Wrose Brow was a nickname for the Leeds Road site ( unlikely I know ) I’ve no idea .

Incidentally I lived at Wrose ( Low Ash ) for about 5 years ????

I remember MB being at this site (now SP Autocare but buildings are the original ones). I lived not far up West Royd Cres and later my parents just up the Leeds Rd. All the factory workers esp the girls would pour out at lunchtime and order loads of fish and finerks for themselves and their friends at the Ritz or Kershaw's chip shops nearby and you had to get there first as they didn't take any prisoners. I could be wrong about it being MB but that's my memory.

From the CMB ( as they are now known ) website:

As I said before, it was always referred to as the  the Old Wrose Brow site, I always thought of it being somewhere at the top of Carr Lane .

But if it was where SP Autocare is now it sort of makes sense as Wrose Brow Road is further down Leeds Road  a little bit.

Card : wonder what the rest of TVF are making of our exchange of views about a factory in the middle of West Yorkshire back in the 60’s . ?? ????

I remember Lens Scooters on the bend at the bottom of Leeds Rd in the 60s, just to keep on topic, Peter Sutcliffe may have visited there at some time.

Yes they sold Lambrettas. It's a Peugeot- Citroen breakers now. I don't suppose Sutcliffe would have visited there if it had been there at the time. But you never know........

In the 1970s, I lived in Menston and went to school in Bradford, passing through Baildon and Shipley. Sutcliffe's Heaton house was 1 mile from my school. In 1981, I was a student in Sheffield and lived less than a mile from where Sutcliffe was caught.
