(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc and Moderna Inc are testing their COVID-19 vaccines against the new fast-spreading version of the virus that has emerged in Britain, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Moderna expects immunity from its vaccine to protect against the variants and is performing more tests in the coming weeks to confirm, the company said in a statement to CNN. https://cnn.it/38qpbFl

Pfizer said it is "generating data" on how well blood samples from people immunized with its vaccine "may be able to neutralize the new strain from the UK," according to the report.

Pfizer and Moderna did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The discovery of the new strain sowed a fresh wave of panic in a pandemic that has killed about 1.7 million people and infected more than 77.15 million worldwide.

The main worry is that the new variant is 40%-70% more transmissible.

Scientists have said there's no evidence that vaccines currently being deployed in the United Kingdom - made by Pfizer and BioNTech - or other COVID-19 shots in development will not protect against this variant, known as the B.1.1.7 lineage.

  • "We don't know at the moment if our vaccine is also able to provide protection against this new variant," but because the proteins on the variant are 99% the same as the prevailing strains, BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) has "scientific confidence” in the vaccine.

  • "The likelihood that our vaccine works... is relatively high," CEO Ugur Sahin declared, saying the company is currently conducting further studies and hopes to have certainty within the coming weeks.

  • Dr. Moncef Slaoui, head of Operation Warp Speed, also expects Pfizer's (NYSE:PFE) and Moderna's (NASDAQ:MRNA) COVID-19 shots will be effective against a new mutation of the virus, dubbed B117. The chances one set of mutations would completely alter the structures found around the spike proteins "are extremely low," he declared.

"There is no evidence ... ", said all the scientists. As the vaccine companies rush to study the new mutation.

Baffling comment.  The only way to acquire the evidence is by doing these studies.

It is like trying various vaccines against  common colds

It would result in Human pin cushions as each new mutation arrives...aka: dog chasing his tail

2021 we will hear terms such as .....

Spain coronavirus variant

Italy coronavirus variant

Africa coronavirus variant

Greek coronavirus variant

etc

etc

etc

Juggling with eels comes to mind ???? From various reports it would appear that the UK vaccine, which uses traditional technology, would be the safest one to take if one has to get a vaccine. Personally I would favour half a lemon in the blender, with honey and hot water ????

Till everyone on the planet is vaccinated multiple times and then and only then they will admit these vaccines don't work. Good luck with your JABS.

Yes, of course, sorry it was not clear. I'm not criticizing scientists, I am one. I'm criticizing the media and spokespeople who often use terms like 'no evidence' to suggest there is no need to worry. No evidence   literally means something is not known.

I'm against dumbing things down. The general public has the capacity to reason. Accurate information makes people smarter. Dumbing down causes confusion.

I have read that this so called variant did not originate in the UK, the UK has exposed it after much testing

It seems from what I have read that this variant was known as far back as September and was detected in europe

very confusing

The U.K. have one of the worlds best genome testing facilities and have been trying to detect mutations . An example is Wales alone have done more than the whole of France in this search for Covid mutations . We have basically just found one way before anyone else but now it’s called  the U.K. variant . This variant has been all over the globe most probably but the U.K. identified it first .  But Macron closed the border ..... no politics to see here .... nothing to see.... nothing to do with the B word .... ????

Why aren't all these companies supplying Thailand with vaccines?
What happened.  First World first?  Thailand to the back of the line?
Why haven't Thai authorities made this happen?  Vaccines have been released.  But not in Thailand?
