Thailand could see tens of thousands of new daily COVID cases by next month: CCSA

Thailand could see tens of thousands of new COVID-19 cases per day by mid January, if people fail to follow the preventive guidelines issues to combat the spread of the virus.

 

Speaking at the daily briefing regarding the COVID-19 situation, Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said new cases will rise to four or five digits by the middle of next month if the public fails to cooperate with measures put in place. 

 

"If we do not follow the measures set and if there is no cooperation the number of infected people per day could reach thousands, or tens of thousands, by mid-January 2021, Dr Taweesilp said. 

 

Dr Taweesilp urged people to refrain from socialising in order for the number of new cases to “run flat” rather than spike. 

 

Dr Taweesilp's advice comes just days before the New Year’s Eve celebrations, with reports earlier today suggesting that many Thais have decided to stay home rather than travel domestically. However, large numbers of people are still set to travel upcountry before the end of the week. 

 

Meanwhile, governors in provinces with high numbers of  new cases have been ordered to ensure that all COVID-19 preventive measures are being properly implemented.

 

The news comes as Thailand on Monday announced 144 new COVID-19 cases.

 

Most of the new infections were discovered in Rayong (56 cases), where  the province has been put under the strictest measures in a bid to contain the spread of the virus. 

 

The new wave of cases in Rayong have been linked to an illegal gambling den. Despite claims that no illegal gambling takes place in the province, Rayong police chief, Police Maj Gen Paphatdet Ketphan was transferred to an inactive post on Monday over the matter.

 

Elsewhere, new cases were reported in Bangkok (19), Nakhon Pathom (18), Chonburi (6), Samut Prakan (5), Nonthaburi (3), Nakhon Nayok (2), Pathum Thani (2), Chiang Mai, Lopburi, Samut Sakhon and Sukhothai (1 each)

I'm not being alarmist but they really should have cancelled the new year, stop people travelling, stop the spread, too chuffing late now, 100's of thousands have left their provinces for the countryside, why are the government so bloody weak ? 

 

January is going to be the worst month of our lives so far, this bunch of muppets in charge should have grown some balls and banned all travel, allow people to shop for essentials & give adequate warnings of things like bars, restaurants, off licences (bottle shops) closures.

 

Gawd it's not difficult, don't send crack troops ( I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere) to fight kids, protect your borders and stop the travelling, chuffing dimwits.

What about all that gloating about how well they handled covid compared to the dirty farrang countries? 

 

I guess it was just luck then!

Well. if they're that scared then why on earth haven't they cancelled all New Year parties and travel, instead of just a few headline events? The messages here are becoming as mixed and muddled as they are back in the UK, and look what a mess things are there. The government shouldn't be asking people to follow the rules, it should be forcing them to, as it did back in April. Come on, Prayut, have you lost your mojo?

8 months later there is a different perspective. There is still time for a lockdown and other containment strategies. Not everyone believes in blanket lockdowns but here we know when given government directions the people will cooperate unlike the UK and USA.

As luck would have it it's all under control by the controllers????

Well it was at least partly luck but it's now run out. 

If they are starting to see several huge spikes across the country they need to start vaccinating asap. 

 

And yet Thailand still plan to start vaccinations in 5 months from now.

 

If Thailand don't have their contracts on paper with the vaccine manufactures by now , they are in for an unpleasant surprise. 

 

EU just published today that the Pfizer vaccines they ordered will take 10 months before all doses has been delivered, so it's not like you can just order them and get them the week after. 

Good, about time they faced the reality that a pandemic means people get infected. Closing down borders and retreating from reality was never a viable option beyond a few months. Given that millions of chinese were flying in and out of thailand until march, COVID may be already be endemic anyway, and this whole thing a pointless excercise.

Not necessarily, there has been very low levels of deaths throughout asia and africa for some reason.

 

On the first, disgusting if you like, you are denying reality, we cant stop a virus, until a vaccine is found anyway, and the current vaccines dont stop anyone from getting infected, they minimise the impact of the virus on our health.

 

On illegal entry, as I said, its just not viable for a country like thailand, and you just proved my point.

Er well, 61 deaths in Thailand versus 1,230,000 in farang countries, I think they still have a slight edge. 
 

And can you post a link of the gloating you are claiming please. I must of missed that.

yep Thailand was lauded for its containment strategy of locking down in March (actually it was at the end of March) and clearly the virus was here in January or even before.

yes no one really knows the reason for variations in mortality from country to country. Could be pre existing immunity or that the virus is less stable in certain climatic conditions 

it seems doubtful that government containment policies are the reason since some of the hardest locked down countries like Belgium Argentina and Peru have very high death rates

The lockdown will happen start of January, they are just waiting for people to spend money over new years holiday

Ironically, I can just imagine...next March / April UK finally gets enough of us vaxxed and we're relaxing a little.....thinks...I'll have a holiday in Thailand now, only i can't because Thailand is where we were a year ago!   

 

To be clear, I am not hoping for this scenario, but sadly, I do see it as likely.

This isn’t a black or white thing, there’s a lot of grey area.

The countries who get them first are the ones who invested and helped. Some countries actually invested in multiple vaccine candidates so that they could increase the chances of being early on the delivery list.

 

No doubt Thailand made no such investment. And why would they when they are going to make their own Thai vaccine from village herbs and chilli extracts? ????

Virus mutate..............

 

They mutate when under pressure.  A virus does not want to kill its host..........it has to find the balance to thrive in the host and spread.

 

So as the virus gets under pressure, from lockdowns, or vaccines, or lack of cases.........it mutates to become easier to spread.

 

This is happening all over the world now.

 

The 1st wave in Thailand was easy to control.

 

The 2nd wave will not be so in my view................this time the virus will have mutated and become much easier to spread.

 

The good thing is though.........as it mutates under pressure it "mostly" becomes less serious, just easier to spread.

 

So there should be worldwide now more and more cases and less and less deaths per case............eg the IFR will fall and fall and fall.

 

Generally the virus should keep mutating and getting weaker and end up just another Corona Cold virus in 2022/23........causing just a runny nose or sore throat.

 

Lets not forget........our current "colds" were actually deadly virus back in the 1800's............that have over time mutated and weakened so they can now live among us..........

 

 

The general point after all that is.................................this time the virus will spread more easily in Thailand.........its not like the 1st wave.  Stay safe !!

Viruses do not mutate in response to their environment. Viruses mutate. Period. Some viruses mutate more than others. Some mutations are more beneficial than others.

 

Over time, if mutations occur, and are randomly more beneficial, it will appear that the virus is "intelligently" responding to its environment, but that is an illusion. Thus, a virus does not somehow "realize" there is a lockdown or a vaccine and "decide" that it needs to mutate. Furthermore, no virus attempts to "not kill its host". Viruses mindlessly replicate. If not efficient enough, they die out due to a lack of replication. To assign some sort of "intelligence" to viruses results in bad science and bad policy. Your assumptions about a more virulent 2nd wave, or the virus becoming more "friendly" over time, are simply conjecture. And it is most likely the reason for the currently falling fatality rates is due in large part to the culling of the most vulnerable in the earlier waves.
