British expat and popular travel blogger Richard Barrow has been recognised in the New Year Honours list.

Richard, who is well known for his tireless work promoting Thailand and keeping foreigners updated on all manner of issues in the country via his social media profiles, has been recognised “For Services to British Nationals Overseas”.

“I was delighted to hear that I had a small mention in the New Year honours list. The citation reads, “For Services to British Nationals Overseas”, Richard tweeted on Thursday.

“I am not sure if I deserve a medal from the Queen for tweeting, but I will strive to live up to this honour”.

Richard has officially been awarded the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) for services to British Nationals overseas.

Well done Richard and thank you for all your hard work!

Congratulations and well deserved Richard but sadly, the medal represents a a rather paltry 'Empire' these days! Surely they could come up with a more representative name.

Does more for foreigners in Thailand than anyone else....absolutely deserved and something to be very, very proud of!

Troll /flame comments removed.

The medal is accurate. An empire is defined as a sovereign state consisting of multiple  territories and their inhabitants subject to a single ruling authority.  The British Empire includes 14 overseas territories. It even fought a recent war to liberate one, the Falkland Islands.

I read Mr. Barrow from time to time and appreciate his insight and  news.  Good job.

Dunno about that, English is the lingua franca of the modern World, and British standards of justice, education and democracy are still the benchmark to which most developing countries aspire.

The Empire has this legacy which lives on.

Well done to Richard, an accolade that will no doubt irritate the pants off his detractors on here.

I thought he was being deported?

Very well deserved recognition.  Congratulations Richard and thank you for all your hard work.

It's saying something when a travel blogger is more help to overseas nationals than their own government/embassy.

Well deserved given his selfless hours of service to the expat community here in Thailand.  Much appreciated work that benefits us all.

Has he ever received any award from Thailand for his good work? ????

Good work, Richard!

But brace yourself for some "recognition" from the Thai government next year, too... when they (once again) keep you in limbo about whether your visa extension will sail through or not.

Well done Richard, well deserved, you provide a great service!

A leftist view not shared by most. However, I thought RB was just another TVF contributer , an ex pat with too much time on his hands. Does he review Pattaya Go Go bars?

Thanks for pointing out the unpalatable truth regarding the British Empire. The fashionable leftist view promoted from infant school onwards overlooks the bravery, determination and self sacrifice and suffering our forefather experienced in creating the network of political and trading alliances we refer to as Empire. The critics of which NEVER criticize the Islamic Empire or soviet Empire. Selective outrage raises its head over a 'travel award'....yet again.

That's gonna <deleted> off the men in brown! Can't deny the visa now!

Maybe read the article, or the post you're commenting on?

Congratulations!

Funnily enough, he tweeted the following earlier today: "I’m always a bit nervous when I hear that my name has been mentioned on the Thai Visa forum. But thanks for that nice article guys. And also thanks for turning off the comments! Happy New Year!"

Makes me wonder, why is he so afraid of comments on here? Which - evidently - are NOT turned off, and most have been very positive. I, too, appreciate the information he provides. His Covid-19 updates are quality.

Crikey, don't tell the old gammons here! They are still spluttering into their G and Ts after

realising that Thailand was never part of the British empire, even though they waddle

around on their gout ridden feet expecting everything to be as it is in blighty!!

I think his TVF name is Leaver.

Many congratulations, well deserved.

Thankfully not a member of the Empire but still congratulate Richard. His info is helpful to many and this recognition is well earned.

Well deserved. Great guy.

Richard, have your visa problems disappeared? If so, good on ya

Keep up great posts

On what basis is "the" Queen qualified to award a medal to anyone?

He does a good job and helps a lot of people.  Well done RB.
