Now I have successfully uploaded an image of the insect I would be most grateful if someone could advise me if it is a dangerous as it looks. I found it in my front yard today

Whip scorpion aka vinegaroon because their defence mechanism is to spray a vinegar-like fluid. Completely harmless unless you're insect prey size.

My Mrs says whatever you do don't step on it it can give a nasty sting. 

Looks kinda nasty even if my Mrs is wrong.
