BANGKOK (NNT) - Temples across the nation have committed to suspending religious activities in light of the spread of COVID-19, with Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan to be closed to the public until January 31 and Wat Rakhang Kositaram Woramahawihan imposing strict health measures.

Wat Rakhang Kositaram Woramahawihan has erected vinyl signs in its parking lot and inner areas reminding visitors of how to avoid COVID-19 infection. Stickers are being used to set distances between visitors.

The main temple in the grounds now clearly indicates that the faithful must remain at least a meter away from one another and that there is a limit to the number of people that can be present at any one time. Hand gels are also being provided for hand washing.

Assistant to the temple’s abbot Phra Maha Preecha Pasanno, explained today that the temple has been exercising such measures since the first wave of COVID-19 but relaxed them somewhat in line with the situation. Since the new wave began, all measures are again being strictly enforced and monks at the temple have been told to stop all activities outside the temple grounds.

"We only carry out morning alms and have suspended 100 percent of all other activities. We must do so, as the state asks us to, for our own good. There are many measures and people may feel pressured by how complicated life has become but we must stay aware that it is all for our own good. It is not that hard to care for yourself because if you become ill, it all stops. We must remember that good health is the greatest fortune"

Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan has meanwhile, suspended all visits until January 31 and has begun cleanup operations. Samphantawong District Office has provided disinfectants to the popular temple so that it may remain COVID-19 free.

Those who wish to view the iconic temple can do so through a new application, which presents all of its structures and ancient relics in an online virtual depiction.

Religious activities except for funeral rites will nevertheless be suspended for the time being with only direct relatives allowed to attend funeral proceedings and prayers reduced from 7 days to 3.
