bonsaimax Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 I've got a not so old P4 2.4GHz 478 socket and 1 GB of DDRAM (not sure 333 or 400 MHz). I'm sure that these still can be put together to make a "decent" machine mainly just for internet surfing. I still have some spare components like IDE HDD and power supply. The only parts I lack are a mainboard and graphics card case and monitor. . My question is: 1) Are there still any 478 mainboards available out there? 2) Which graphics card should I go for, as I am not sure if PCI-Ex cards are compatible with 478 socket mainboards? 3) Will the current LCD monitors (DVI) be compatible with the older PCI graphics cards? 4) Will this be economically viable/practical? cheers!
lor Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Did a quick check and found that Asrock do a motherboard for about 34 pound sterling. It uses dual channel DDR400 memory, has internal graphics which will work on an LCD screen (Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2), onboard 10/100 LAN connection (for internet). Also onboard sound, USB2 and uses IDE and SATA drives (but no raid). This seems to be a good solution for you. All you need is the board then you are up and running. It is the ASROCK P4i65G SCK478 DDR VGA+5.1SND+10/100+SATA Regards Chris
solo siam Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 Yes to all of those although if its just for surfing buy a motherboard with integrated graphics, you can get a VGA-DVI connector, again for surfing and office stuff it will be fine.
bonsaimax Posted May 10, 2007 Author Posted May 10, 2007 Thanks for the replies. Just curious, are there 478 mainboards with PCI express?
ballbreaker Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 Thanks for the replies. Just curious, are there 478 mainboards with PCI express? Yes, but you have no need if building just for internet and basic office stuff.
Richard-BKK Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 If you interested in a good socket 478 mainboard I have a Asus P4S800D for sale, not sure what I want for it. (Maybe 1000 Baht, mainboard is still under warranty) http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&...amp;modelmenu=2
