Over one tonne of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and remnants of war were cleared from a sunken warship in the Mekong River in Kampong Cham province on Sunday, increasing the total amount recovered to more than six tonnes since its discovery on November 5, 2020.

Commander of the UXO Clearance Unit of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC) Major General Mey Sophea said that more than six tonnes of UXO and remnants of war have been recovered from the wreckage in Srey Santhor district’s Meanchey commune.

“Specialised forces have been collecting and retrieving UXOs and are working diligently,” Maj Gen Sophea said. He said experts had to remove debris and old fishing gear that were covering the ship, which has made it difficult to collect the UXOs and remnants of war.
