HUA HIN (NNT) - Hua Hin airport in Prachuap Khiri Khan will be further upgraded to serve larger aircraft for long-haul flights in 2 years.

Deputy Transport Minister Thaworn Senneam said the Department of Airports will work with the public and private sector to develop the airport, to meet the projected demand for air connections to the popular seaside destination.

He said further upgrades are necessary, as the International Air Transport Association says the domestic aviation market will return to normal next year, and the international market a year later.

95 billion baht for high speed rail service through Hua Hin from Bangkok to be commissioned in 2022.

64 billion baht for new highway from Nakhon Pathom (around Bangkok) to open 2022(?).

Why the airport expansion? I'd like to see the economic analysis and associated travel projections showing that all three projects are independently justified.

The smart play would be for Bangkok Airways to have 3 flights a week from Utapao to Hua Hin. This would give Pattaya, Rayong,  and Chantaburi residents a quick and economical way to travel there without the hassle of driving around Bangkok. I know I would take those flights 2 or 3 times a year. Even 2 flights a week would probably work since most people would go for a 3 or 4 day holiday. There is also the possibility of connecting with train service to the Southern provinces if they create a favorable scheduling connection.

I imagine they would be planning for flights from places other than Bangkok - like Chiang Mai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing etc and hopefully Sydney one day ????

It's flights from Malaysia they are after.

From Chiang Mai to Hua Hin would also be nice.

Also, Chon Buri also has a ferry service to Hua Hin that should be much quicker than driving around BKK, that might be nice to try if you didn't know about it yet.

Air Asia had direct flights from Hua Hin to both Chiang Mai and Udon Thani, they were originally scheduled to run up to 26 March, but they have dropped both routes.

The ferry hasn't been operating for months.

Please let me know when the ferry is operating. Until then please offer productive comments.

It's been permanently cancelled according to news reports today.

That's the problem, they're independently justified. ????
