Report DepEd Responds to Election-Related Issues Amid Philippine Midterm Elections
File photo for reference only The Department of Education (DepEd) is actively addressing over 160 reports of election-related incidents received on May 12, amidst the ongoing 2025 midterm elections. The incidents primarily involve vote counting machine (VCM) malfunctions, missing voter names, and health concerns affecting teachers and poll workers. Dennis Legaspi, DepEd Media Relations Chief, confirmed that these reports were submitted to the DepEd Election Command Center and are being resolved in cooperation with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and other agencies. In response to the surge in issues, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara has instructed the department’s Election Task Force (ETF) to enhance coordination and support. Undersecretary Malcolm Garma, leading the task force, is collaborating with regional and division ETF teams to swiftly address concerns, particularly those impacting the safety and well-being of teachers involved in the electoral process. DepEd is working closely with COMELEC and PNP to ensure a smooth and honest election. "The reports are immediately being addressed in coordination with COMELEC, PNP, and other partner agencies," explained Legaspi. Secretary Angara, who voted at Aurora National High School, expressed gratitude to the teachers and poll workers and encouraged the public to "vote for good people." He reaffirmed DepEd's commitment to supporting teachers and maintaining the election's integrity, underscoring the backing from the President and public trust. To further support the electoral process, DepEd has activated its Election Command Center in Makati City, operational around the clock from May 11 to 13. This center, supported by regional offices, serves as a national hub for coordination, underscoring the agency's commitment to ensuring a well-conducted election. For the first time, the ETF operates with a P99.3 million budget under the General Appropriations Act, enabling deployment of specialized teams for real-time monitoring, legal support, incident response, and post-election reporting. These efforts aim to protect personnel welfare and ensure swift resolution of field concerns. The DepEd Central Office ETF can be contacted via multiple hotlines for urgent matters, highlighting the department's proactive stance in managing election-day challenges and upholding the democratic process.
