PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia reported its first death from the coronavirus on Thursday amid its biggest COVID-19 outbreak so far, after a 50-year-old man succumbed to the virus after testing positive less than two weeks ago.

With just 1,124 coronavirus infections recorded in total, Cambodia has among the fewest cases in Asia, although a sharp rise in infections since Feb. 20 has seen its overall tally more than double.

The man died mid-morning local time on Thursday, the health ministry said in a statement.

It said he tested positive on Feb. 27 and was a driver for a Chinese national who lived in the coastal town of Sihanoukville, who was also infected.

The Southeast Asian nation of about 16 million people is located next to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, which have all been successful in keeping coronavirus outbreaks under control.

Cambodia started its COVID-19 vaccination programme last month.

Very sad and RIP Khmer man, but the result of 4 infected inconsiderate Chinese women escaping from their quarantine in a Phnom Penh hotel by bribing a security guard and then going on a shopping, entertainment, eating and travelling spree infecting many others (the Feb 20 incident). All the dedicated hard work by Cambodian health workers to keep our figures well down (and no deaths) undone in a few seconds of corruption! The guard (now out of quarantine) has been charged with causing a National disaster and will be fined far in excess of the bribe he took. For starters, one of the women will be deported and banned from ever entering Cambodia again - unfortunately, damage done!

Cambodia tests per million 33,000 (555,000 tests)

UK tests per million 1,512,000 (103,053,000)

I would imagine if you test 102,500,000 less you will find a LOT less
