tomtaylor1
Hi All, after having the head gasket changed, at workshop, car ran ok apart from oil leak from valve cover gasket, I removed distributor to replace with new gasket. Timed ignition at 10 degrees before TDC using strobe light, on number one spark plug lead. Firing order is marked on the distributor 1342 anti clock wise. Number one being on the compression stroke, checked by turning engine and feeling for air being pushed up the one cylinder, ie both valves closed. replaced spark plug leads all plugs firing. Could the valve timing belt have slipped?. Engine will not run smooth , will not idle, runs really badly. Thank you in advance. Take samples to the auto parts store, of the different sizes, job done. Once running, engine warm, spray WD40 or equivalent around the intake manifold, carb mounting plate. If there is a gasket leak you will hear the idle increase as the WD40 hits the leaking area and seals it up for a moment.
stubuzz
Probably put the distributor back in the wrong position. Check the static timing. More info below. https://forum.suzukiclubuk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=9551
Lancashirelad
Having checked for air leaks as previously suggested. Mark the position of the distrubutor. Slack the clamp off, then turn it slowly back and forth to see if the idle improves. Edited March 17, 2021 by Lancashirelad typo

Go the marks on the engine pulley for TDC and the mark on the camshaft pulley line up? First rule of trouble shooting is: What has changed? Could be that the valve timing is off by one tooth. When the head was put back on. But unlikely if it ran OK before you removed the distributor. Edited March 17, 2021 by VocalNeal

tomtaylor1
Hi, thank you All for your replies. Checked the timing with a strobe light, new set of plugs and leads now runs a lot better , can now drive it to The Guy who works mainly on Suzukis.
