UXO clearance of second sunken warship starts

Featured Replies

The Underwater Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit in the Ministry of Defence will begin the UXO clearance from a second sunken warship in Boeng Krum commune in Kandal province’s Lvea Em district from today. Work to recover weapons and munitions in a first warship sunk in the Mekong River in Kampong Cham province’s Srey Santhor district is expected to be completed in the first week of next month.

General Neang Phath, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Defence and chair of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group on UXO clearance, said yesterday that according to research, the second location is in Boeng Krum village in Boeng Krum commune. He said there are about 800 tonnes of weapons and ammunitions on a Lon Nol-era warship which sunk in 1972.

Gen Phat emphasised that the operations to clear unexploded ordnance from sunken vessels at bottoms of rivers is an unprecedented historical achievement for Cambodia which has enough capacity to not only clear unexploded ordnance on the mainland but underwater, too.
